Vance Smith
Vance C. Smith (born February 27, 1952) is an American politician and businessman from Georgia. Smith is a Republican member of Georgia House of Representatives representing the 133rd district since 2019. Education In 1974, Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Columbus State University. Career Smith is the founder and CEO of Vance Smith Contracting and Consulting. Prior to that, Smith acted as President and CEO of Vance Smith Construction Company which was founded in 1974. From 2009-2011, Smith served as the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation. Prior to his election as representative for the 133rd district, Smith had represented Harris, Muscogee, and Troup counties in the Georgia House of Representatives. Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the "whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators, or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping. Columbus State University is a public university in Columbus, Georgia. Founded as Columbus College in 1958, the university was established and is administered by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. History The university was first called Columbus College when it opened as a junior college in a hosiery mill in 1958. The college was staffed by fifteen faculty and staff and almost three hundred students attended courses in the first year. Columbus College relocated to the midtown area in 1963, building a campus defined by modern architecture on what was previously a dairy farm.
