Van Den Bergh (crater)
Van den Bergh is an eroded lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon. It lies just to the east of the larger crater Cockcroft. To the north is Evershed. Since its formation, this crater has been heavily worn by subsequent impacts until its features have become softened and rounded. The satellite crater Van den Bergh M lies across the southern rim, and there is a depression from an old impact in the northwestern part of the interior floor. Several small craterlets lie along the rim to the east and west. This crater lies within the path of the ray system from the crater Jackson to the south-southwest. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a NASA robotic spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit. Data collected by LRO have been described as essential for planning NASA's future human and robotic missions to the Moon. Its detailed mapping program is identifying safe landing sites, locating potential resources on the Moon, characterizing the radiation environment, and demonstrating new technologies. George Van Den Bergh
George van den Bergh (25 April 1890 in Oss – 3 October 1966 in Oegstgeest) was a Dutch law professor and amateur astronomer. Van den Bergh was the son of Samuel van den Bergh, one of the founders of Unilever. His brother Sidney James and his nephew Maarten would follow his father in business life, while George pursued an academic career. He was a lawyer in Amsterdam, 1915–1936. From 1925–33 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands. He was author of ''Aarde en wereld in ruimte en tijd: Een uiteenzetting voor iedereen'' (1935) which was translated into English in 1937 as ''The Universe in Space and Time'' (U.K. edition) and ''Astronomy for the Millions'' (U.S. edition). Far Side (Moon)
The far side of the Moon is the lunar hemisphere that always faces away from Earth, opposite to the near side, because of synchronous rotation in the Moon's orbit. Cockcroft is a lunar impact crater that is situated on the far side of the Moon from the Earth, so that it has only been observed and photographed from orbit. Evershed is a lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon, named after the English solar astronomer John Evershed. Ray System
A ray system comprises radial streaks of fine '' ejecta'' thrown out during the formation of an impact crater, looking somewhat like many thin spokes coming from the hub of a wheel. The rays may extend for lengths up to several times the diameter of their originating crater, and are often accompanied by small secondary craters formed by larger chunks of ejecta. Jackson (crater)
Jackson is a prominent lunar impact crater that is located in the northern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon. Less than one crater to the northeast is the crater Mineur, and to the south-southwest lies McMath. This crater created a large ray system. A skirt of higher-albedo material covers the surface within one crater diameter, with a slightly darker band along the outer ramparts. Beyond that radius, the rays form wide sections that grow increasingly diffuse and wispy with distance. The largest sections lie in roughly 90° arcs to the northeast and southwest, while a narrower arc projects to the south-southeast. The rays continue for hundreds of kilometers across the surface.
