Huizum
Huizum is a residential area of the municipality of Leeuwarden in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. It has approximately 9,000 inhabitants. Huizum was formerly part of Leeuwarderadeel and incorporates a former village. Description Huizum has three sections: Huizum-West, Huizum-Oost and Huizum-Dorp (Huizum West, Huizum East and Huizum Village). Huizum-Dorp is a former village; , whose oldest section dates to the 12th century, was declared a Rijksmonument in 1967. Huizum-West was developed in the early 20th century. The section, built in 1914–1915, was designed by Willem Cornelis de Groot and in 2007 was declared a protected national monument in the category of villages and towns. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Jan Van Huysum
Jan van Huysum (or Jan van Huijsum) (15 April 1682 – 8 February 1749) is the most notable member of the Van Huysum family of artists working in Dutch Golden Age of the 17th and 18th centuries; “by common consent, Jan van Huysum has been held to be the best painter of flowers.” Trained in decoration from a young age, he “gradually developed an execution of details of the utmost beauty and finish” creating “wonderful flower pieces whereon drops of water and crawling ants could be seen without a magnifying glass.” Life and work Jan was the son of the painter Justus van Huysum and his first wife Margrietje Schouten and the older brother of Jacob van Huysum and Justus van Huysum the Younger. Justus Van Huysum
Justus van Huysum, also spelled Huijsum, (July 8, 1659 in Amsterdam – April 23, 1716 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Biography Justus Van Huysum is the son of the decorative painter Jan van Huysum the Elder, who moved to Amsterdam from Huizum (near Leeuwarden, Friesland) between 1654 and 1657, where his boys Justus and Caspar Van Huysum, an engraver in adulthood, were born. Other sources says Justus’ father was a schoolteacher. According to biographer of Dutch painters Arnold Houbraken, when Justus turned 16, his father sent him to learn painting from Nicolaes Berchem in 1675. Houbraken said he was very good at all sorts of painting, but excelled at flower painting, and founded a family business in painting flowers in vases. Jacob van Huysum (1688 – 1740) was an 18th-century botanical painter from the northern Netherlands who moved to England in 1721.
