Hudson Van Etten
Hudson Van Etten (May 17, 1874 – October 27, 1941) was a seaman serving in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Van Etten was born on May 17, 1874, in Port Jervis, New York to Hudson Van Etten and Lydia Cuddeback Van Etten. His father committed suicide when he was six years old. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy he was sent to fight in the Spanish–American War aboard the gunboat USS ''Nashville'' as a seaman. In 1914 he married Margaret Louise Van Etten at Port Jervis, New York. They had four sons. He died on October 27, 1941, and is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Greenland, New Hampshire Greenland is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. Jane Van Etten
Jane Van Etten, sometimes credited under her married name, Jane Van Etten Andrews (1869 - April 17, 1950), was an American composer and singer, one of the first female composers in the United States to have an opera produced by a regular opera company. Biography Van Etten was a native of St. Paul, Minnesota; the daughter of Isaac Van Etten, a prominent local lawyer and politician, and Jane Oakes Van Etten. She was descended from the Van Etten family of New York. She studied music and opera singing in New York City, Paris, and London. Among her teachers was Mathilde Marchesi. Her stage debut came as Siébel in ''Faust'' at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1895. She returned to the United States to concertize. By 1901 her reputation was good enough that Benton Harbor's orchestra was advertising itself using Van Etten's name, despite no formal connection or performances. Early life Van Etten was born in Belleville, New Jersey, the middle child of five. She lived in Nutley, New Jersey, then moved to Clinton, New Jersey as a pre-teen. She attended North Hunterdon High School, at which she participated in the chorus and performed in stage musicals. Later, she moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to attend Middle Tennessee State University and studied recording, but dropped out after a year. She ended up working at the Red Rose, a coffee and record shop and music venue in Murfreesboro for about five years. Van Etten, New York
Van Etten is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the town was 1,541 at the 2020 census. The town is named for the two brothers who founded the village of Van Etten in it. The town is at the northeastern corner of the county, northeast of Elmira. History The area that became Van Etten was first settled around 1794, but more permanent settlement came in 1797. The town of Van Etten was formed in 1854 from the towns of Erin and Cayuta. (Cayuta later became part of Schuyler County.) In 1876, the village of Van Etten was incorporated within the town. In 2017, the village of Van Etten voted to dissolve and rejoin the Town of Van Etten. The dissolution took effect on December 31, 2018. Van Etten is a hamlet and census-designated place in Chemung County, New York, United States. It was a village that was absorbed by the Town of Van Etten on December 31, 2018. The population was 537 at the 2010 census. The name came from the two brothers who founded the village. The village of Van Etten was in the town of Van Etten near its eastern town line. The village was northeast of Elmira and was part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The village was founded around 1798 by James and Joshua Van Etten. Previously called "Halls Corners", at first the community was called "Van Ettenville", but was incorporated in 1876 as "Van Etten". The first railroad line arrived in 1871. In 2017, the village of Van Etten voted to dissolve and rejoin the Town of Van Etten. As of the 2019 American Community Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau still lists Van Etten as a village.
