Van D. Bell
Van Daley Bell Jr. (August 25, 1918 – June 3, 2009) was a highly decorated United States Marine Corps, United States Marine with the rank of Colonel (United States), colonel. He was the only Marine to be awarded the Navy Cross in the Korean War and a second award in the Vietnam War. Early career Van D. Bell was born in Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia, on August 25, 1918. Bell enlisted in the Marines on March 13, 1936 and attended Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Afterwards, he was assigned to the 4th Marine Regiment in Republic of China (1912-1949), China, before serving on board the , where he was Admiral Harry E. Yarnell’s bodyguard. The 1st Marine Division (1st MARDIV) is a Marine division of the United States Marine Corps headquartered at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. The 4th Marine Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps. Based at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, it is part of the 3rd Marine Division of the III Marine Expeditionary Force. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (often abbreviated as MCRD PI) is an military installation located within Port Royal, South Carolina, approximately south of Beaufort, the community that is typically associated with the installation. MCRD Parris Island is used for United States Marine Corps Recruit Training of enlisted United States Marines. Recruits living east of the Mississippi River report there to receive initial training.
