Van Brunt House
The Van Brunt House (also known as the Morris House) is a historic home in Miccosukee, Florida, Miccosukee, northeastern Leon County, Florida, US. Location Van Brunt House is located on State Road 59 (Florida), State Road 59, north of the junction with Moccasin Gap Road. On February 27, 1997, it was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. History and construction The home was constructed in 1911 by Richard A. Van Brunt, a merchant who owned and operated a general store, country general store in Miccosukee. It is a wood framed vernacular (architecture), vernacular building with a symmetrical facade. There is a central main door with Transom (architectural), transom and side lights. It has a side gabled roof with dominant gable returns. Further, it has two chimneys that serve six fireplaces. Miccosukee, Florida
Miccosukee is a small unincorporated community in northeastern Leon County, Florida, United States. It is located at the junction of County Road 59 (Veterans Memorial Drive) and County Road 151 (Moccasin Gap Road). Miccosukee was a major center of the Miccosukee tribe, one of the tribes of the developing Seminole nation, during the 18th century. Geography Miccosukee, like other unincorporated areas in northern Leon County, is an area of rolling hills dotted with ponds and lakes. The large, swampy Lake Miccosukee borders the eastern edge of the community. History The town of Miccosukee or Mikasuki was settled by members of the Miccosukee tribe, a group of Creek origin who had settled in Florida and become part of the developing Seminole nation. Concord School (Miccosukee)
Concord School was a school for African-American children built in 1894 in the hamlet of Miccosukee, Florida, Miccosukee, in eastern Leon County, Florida. History The earliest mention of Concord School was in the minutes of a school board meeting from 1878. It was mentioned that the teacher's salary was $20.00 per month. Schooling most likely began in the Miccosukee A.M.E. Church. In 1893, two Miccosukee women, Fayette and Jennie Burned sold a half-acre of their land for $1.00 with the stipulation that a school house be constructed there. The first teachers on record were Lucien Fisher (1893—1894), A.B. Spencer (1895—1897). By 1912, Concord School had grown to be one of the five largest African-American rural schools in Leon County and was granted an assistant teacher. In the 1930s the school was enlarged and during the 1960s was combined with the Miccosukee School with the name remaining Concord. The school was closed in 1985. The Averitt-Winchester House (also known as the Lee House) is a historic house located on the west side of State Road 59 (Florida), State Road 59, south of the Moccasin Gap-Cromartie Road junction in Miccosukee, Florida, Miccosukee, Florida, United States. The house is locally significant in its association with post-American Civil War settlement of the area and essentially unaltered appearance.
