Van Allen House
The Van Allen House is located in Oakland, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The house was built around 1740 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1973. History The Van Allen House was built around 1740 as the home of farmer Hendrik Van Allen. During the Revolutionary War, it served as the headquarters for George Washington on July 14, 1777. At the time, he was moving his troops from Morristown, New Jersey to New York. In 1778 and 1779, Bergen County used the house as a court. Edward Day Page, dairy farmer, businessman, and Oakand's second mayor, owned the house as well as the northern fourth of Oakland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It was saved from demolition by the Oakland Historical society with aid from the Woman's Club of Oakland. It is now maintained as a museum displaying colonial Dutch life. John Evert Van Alen House
John Evert Van Alen House is a historic home located at Defreestville in Rensselaer County, New York. The house was built between 1793 and 1794 and is a two-story, five-bay wide, room and a half deep, frame dwelling with a two-story, three-bay wide addition in the Federal style. The addition dates to about 1840–1854. It is sheathed in clapboards and is topped by a gable roof. Also on the property is a contributing L-shaped barn and the Van Alen family burial ground. The original owner John Evert Van Alen served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1793 to 1799. Van Alen House
The Luykas Van Alen House is an historic Dutch Colonial farmhouse at 2589 New York State Route 9H in the town of Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York. Built about 1737 and enlarged about 1750, it is one of the finest surviving examples of Dutch colonial architecture in upstate New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. It is now an historic house museum operated by the Columbia County Historical Society, and open for tours on weekends from June to October. Description and history The Van Alen House is located in a rural setting of the upper Hudson River valley, on the west side New York 9H, about south of its junction with US 9. It is a -story brick structure, with a steeply pitched gabled roof. It has three chimneys, one at each gable end, and one between two of the three rooms that make up the ground floor. Background On April 19, 1775, the militia of Massachusetts – later joined by the militias of other New England colonies – began a Siege of Boston, siege at Boston to prevent thousands of newly-arrived British troops from moving inland. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress created a Continental Army, to be formed out of the individual militias of the Thirteen Colonies. The next day, Congress created the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and unanimously elected Washington to that position. Congress formally presented him with his commission on June 19, and he departed Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 23, headed for Massachusetts. The Province of New York (1664–1776) was a British proprietary colony and later royal colony on the northeast coast of North America. As one of the Middle Colonies, New York achieved independence and worked with the others to found the United States. In 1664, the Dutch Province of New Netherland in America was awarded by Charles II of England to his brother James, Duke of York. James raised a fleet to take it from the Dutch and the Governor surrendered to the English fleet without recognition from the Dutch West Indies Company that had authority over it.
