Maila Nurmi
Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi (December 11, 1922 – January 10, 2008), known professionally as Maila Nurmi, was an American actress who created the campy 1950s character Vampira. She was raised in Astoria, Oregon, where she worked in tuna and salmon canneries. She relocated to Los Angeles in 1940, with hopes of becoming an actress. After several minor film roles, she found success with her Vampira character, television's first horror host. Nurmi hosted her own series, ''The Vampira Show'', from 1954 to 1955, on KABC-TV. After the show's cancellation, she appeared in the 1959 cult film ''Plan 9 from Outer Space'', directed by Ed Wood. She is also billed as Vampira in the 1959 film ''The Beat Generation'', where she appears out of character and instead plays a beatnik poet. Nurmi also appeared in the 1959 crime film '' The Big Operator''. She was portrayed by Lisa Marie in Tim Burton's 1994 biopic, ''Ed Wood''. The Vampira Show
''The Vampira Show'' was an American television show that broadcast vintage horror films presented by horror host Vampira. The series aired on the Los Angeles ABC television affiliate KABC-TV from April 30, 1954, through April 2, 1955. The weekly series was produced and created by Hunt Stromberg, Jr., and featured the Vampira character created by Maila Nurmi. Though the show was unseen outside of the Los Angeles area, ''The Vampira Show'' has become a cult classic, spawning fan clubs all over the world. Background The costume of Nurmi's Vampira character was inspired by the spooky ''The New Yorker'' cartoons of Charles Addams, later adapted for the TV series ''The Addams Family'' in 1964. The spoof of the vampire genre was re-titled ''Old Dracula'' for release in the United States, in an attempt to ride the success of ''Young Frankenstein''. Glenn Allen Anzalone (born June 23, 1955), better known by his stage name Glenn Danzig, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, film director, and record producer. He is the founder of the rock bands Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig. He owns the Evilive record label as well as Verotik, an adult-oriented comic book publishing company. Beginning in the mid-1970s, Danzig's musical career has encompassed a number of genres through the years, including punk rock and heavy metal, and incorporating influences from industrial, blues and classical music. The Misfits are an American punk rock band often recognized as the pioneers of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. The group was founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, by vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist Glenn Danzig, and drummer Manny Martínez. Jerry Only joined on bass guitar shortly after. ''Walk Among Us'' is the debut album by the American punk rock band Misfits, released in March 1982 by Ruby Records and its parent label Slash Records. It was the first full-length album to be released by the band, although it was the third to be recorded, after '' Static Age'' and '' 12 Hits from Hell''. The recording sessions for ''Walk Among Us'' took place at multiple studios between June 1981 and January 1982, and the album also includes the track " Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?", which was recorded live in New York City. The album was released in January 2006 on Townsend's label, HevyDevy Records.
