Valsolda
Valsolda is a ''comune'' (municipality) of about 1,400 inhabitants in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy on the border with Switzerland. It is located about north of Milan, about north of Como and east of Lugano. Valsolda (''Vallis Solida'' in Latin) gives the name to the river Soldo who cuts across the valley. The municipality was formed in 1927 and it is subdivided into nine villages: Cressogno, San Mamete (the municipal seat), Albogasio, Oria and Santa Margherita on the shores of Lake Lugano, as well as Loggio, Drano, Puria, Dasio and Castello on the mountains above. Valsolda is home to the largest natural reserve in Lombardy with over 785 acres of forest populated by deer, roes, chamois, yews, foxes, eagles, hawks and sparrows. Paolo Pagani
Paolo Pagani (22 September 1655 – 5 May 1716) also known as Paolo Antonio Pagani or Paolo Pagano, was an Italian Baroque/ Mannerism painter of the 17th century. Biography Pagani was born in Valsolda, now a municipality in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about north of Milan and bordering Switzerland. In 1667 he moved to Venice, where he made a series of ten aquatints from works by Giuseppe Diamantini (1621–1705). In 1675 he painted the ''Martyrdom of St. Erasmus''. The painting was exhibited at Palazzo Molin, and is currently located in the National Gallery of Spinola in Genoa. In 1690 he was invited to Vienna by the Emperor Leopold I. In 1696 he returned to Valsolda where he frescoed what is considered his masterwork: the nave of the parish church of San Martino. Antonio Fogazzaro
Antonio Fogazzaro (; 25 March 1842 – 7 March 1911) was an Italian novelist and proponent of Liberal Catholicism. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times. Biography Fogazzaro was born in Vicenza to a wealthy family. In 1864 he obtained a law degree in Turin. He then moved to Milan where he followed the ''scapigliatura'' movement. In 1869 he was back in Vicenza to work as lawyer, but he left this line of work very soon to be a full-time novelist. He began his literary career with ''Miranda'', a poetical romance (1874), followed in 1876 by ''Valsolda'', which, republished in 1886 with considerable additions, constitutes perhaps his principal claim as a poet. His novels, ''Malombra'' (1882), ''Daniele Cortis'' (1887), ''Misterio del Poeta'' (1888), obtained considerable literary success upon their first publication, but did not gain universal popularity until they were discovered and taken up by French critics in 1896. Pellegrino Tibaldi (Valsolda, 1527–Milan, 1596), also known as Pellegrino di Tibaldo de Pellegrini, was an Italian mannerism, mannerist architect, sculpture, sculptor, and mural Painting, painter. Biography Tibaldi was born in Puria di Valsolda, then part of the duchy of Milan, but grew up in Bologna. His father worked as stonemason. He may have apprenticed with Bartolomeo Ramenghi, Bagnacavallo or Innocenzo da Imola. Brunella Gasperini, pen name of Bianca Robecchi (Milan, 22 December 1918 – Milan, 7 January 1979) was an Italian journalist and novelist. Cimadera
Cimadera is a former municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. On 14 April 2013 the former municipalities of Bogno, Cadro, Carona, Certara, Cimadera, Valcolla and Sonvico merged into the municipality of Lugano. History Cimadera is first mentioned in 1422 as ''cima d'Era''. The village was originally an alpine herding camp for the inhabitants of the village Treciore which was part of the town of Sonvico. After the plague of 1525, they settled there permanently. In the 16th century it belonged to the '' Kastlanei'' and parish of Sonvico.
