Valparaiso Sporting Club
Valparaiso Sporting (formerly known as Valparaiso Sporting Club), commonly known as the Sporting, is a thoroughbred flat horse race track in Viña del Mar, Valparaíso Region, Chile. History Valparaiso Sporting Club was founded in 1882 by members of mostly British origin. Since 1885, it is the site of the Chilean Derby, with very high attendances during its day. In 1920, Valparaiso Sporting Club was also the site of the South American Championship (soccer) final. Physical attributes Races are conducted on two left-handed courses, one turf (about 2000 meters long) and one dirt (about 1900 meters long). The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. The Thoroughbred, as it is known today, was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. The 1920 South American Championship of Nations was the fourth continental championship for nations in South America. It was held in Valparaíso, Chile from 11 to 26 September 1920. Overview The participating countries were the host Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil as the defending champion. Uruguay regained the title lost in the last edition, thus becoming champion for the third time in the first four editions of the tournament. Ángel Romano was the top goalscorer alongside teammate José Pérez, with three goals, repeating his feat of three years earlier. Brazil's 6–0 loss to Uruguay in this tournament would not be equaled until the 2014 FIFA World Cup, 94 years later, where they lost 7–1 against Germany. Estadio Sportivo Barracas was a football stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, property of Club Sportivo Barracas. The stadium was one of the most important venues in Argentina, used for football and rugby union matches. It held 37,000 spectators. History Sportivo Barracas promoted to the top division of Argentine football, Primera División, in 1916. Three years later the club started to build a stadium, on a land located on Iriarte, Luzuriaga, Río Cuarto and Perdriel streets of Barracas, Buenos Aires. The field was delimited by poles joined with chains. Between the grandstands and the field, a one-metre wall was built.
