Valley Glen, Los Angeles
Valley Glen is a neighborhood in the southeastern section of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California. Once part of Van Nuys and North Hollywood, it became a separate neighborhood in 1998. Valley Glen is home to Los Angeles Valley College and the Great Wall of Los Angeles, a half-mile-long California-history mural listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History Prior to 1998, Valley Glen was part of Van Nuys and North Hollywood. In 1997, more than 70% of the area's homeowners signed a petition to change the name of a section of Van Nuys (between Burbank and Victory boulevards) to Valley Glen. The proposed Valley Glen neighborhood would encompass 1,200 homes. In February 1998, some adjacent neighborhoods joined Valley Glen and City Councilman Mike Feuer endorsed the name change. Los Angeles Neighborhood Signs
The City of Los Angeles posts neighborhood signs to identify the geographic boundaries of different neighborhoods. LAist stated that these signs indicate “official L.A. neighborhood” designation and in 2008 estimated that Los Angeles had 185 neighborhoods with an official "blue sign.” Design The standard neighborhood sign is rectangular and features white letters on a blue background. The city seal is displayed on the sign. Alternative colors and shapes are possible upon request provided they comply with federal and state law. Example: octagonal signs painted red are reserved for stop signs. Tujunga Wash Greenway
The Tujunga Wash Greenway and Bike Path is a trail and stormwater mitigation project in the Valley Village and Valley Glen neighborhoods of California’s San Fernando Valley. Tujunga Wash is a tributary of the Los Angeles River; Tujunga has its own tributary, Pacoima Wash. The wash was channelized for flood control by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s. Created between 2007 and 2012, the -long greenbelt extends from Oxnard Street in the south to Vanowen Street in the north. It “takes urban runoff from the flood control channel and creates a new stream with some of the natural characteristics from the Tujunga Wash, while native plants in the streambed help clean the water and establish habitat for animals such as birds, frogs and lizards.” The naturalized side channel within the greenway is a bioswale that recharges groundwater with an average of annually. The Great Wall Of Los Angeles
The ''Great Wall of Los Angeles'' is a 1978 mural designed by Judith Baca and executed with the help of over 400 community youth and artists coordinated by the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC). The mural, on the concrete banks of Tujunga Wash in the San Fernando Valley was Baca's first mural and SPARC's first public art project. Under the official title of ''The History of California'', it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
