Valley District (VHSL)
The AA Valley District is a district in AA Region III, Region III of the Virginia High School League. As the district's name implies, all the schools are located in the central part of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, along Interstate 81. Most of the member schools are part of the Harrisonburg, Virginia, Harrisonburg and Staunton, Virginia, Staunton areas. Overview In 2007, all of the Valley District member schools moved from AA Region II, Region II to Region III due to the growth of Region II and the realignment of the AA River Ridge District from Region III to AA Region IV, Region IV. In addition, the district split into two separate districts after the regional shift. The Harrisonburg area schools (Broadway, Harrisonburg, Spotswood, and Turner Ashby) formed the AA Massanutten District. AA Region III
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities. Private and religious schools and teams of homeschooled students belong to other sanctioning organizations, the largest of which is the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Proposals in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for the public high school they would otherwise attend have failed to pass. Waynesboro High School
Waynesboro High School is a public high school in Waynesboro, Virginia, United States. Construction on the school began in 1936, funded by a Public Works Administration grant. Soon after it was completed in April 1938, there were 370 students and 13 faculty members. In the spring of 2015, there was an ongoing debate on the future of the building: to rebuild or renovate. As of 2018, construction began for the renovation and the new additions to Waynesboro High School. Since 2019, Bryan Stamm has served as Waynesboro High School's principal. Bridgewater, Virginia
Bridgewater is an incorporated town in Rockingham County, Virginia, United States. The population was 6,596 at the 2020 census. It is included in the Harrisonburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. History William Magill first settled along the North River in 1746, and the area became known as Magill's Ford. The first bridge across the North River was built in 1820, and for a time the young community was known as Bridgeport. The Town received its charter from the Virginia General Assembly on February 7, 1835, then incorporated as Bridgewater. Every February 7, the Town holds an annual Charter Day celebration to commemorate the granting of the charter. Bridgewater College is located within the Town, and was first established in 1880. Turner Ashby High School is located in Bridgewater, Virginia in the Rockingham County Public School district. History When Turner Ashby High School opened in the fall of 1956, it became the third consolidated high school in Rockingham County. Schools consolidated were Bridgewater, Dayton, and Mt. Clinton. The original Turner Ashby building was located on a twenty-acre plot on the north side of Dayton, and now serves grades six through eight as Wilbur S. Pence Middle School. The name Turner Ashby High School was selected by the Rockingham County School Board because of the school’s location in the Ashby District of the county. Stuarts Draft is a census-designated place (CDP) in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. It is part of the Staunton– Waynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area and adjacent to the South River. Its population was 12,142 as of the 2020 census. Stuarts Draft has a history as an agricultural community, dating back to the 1730s. Stuarts Draft High School
Stuarts Draft High School is in the community of Stuarts Draft in southeastern Augusta County, Virginia. The school opened in 1970 during a consolidation period for the county's public schools. Stuarts Draft High School originally served grades 8 through 12, and housed the 7th grade due to overcrowding at Stuarts Draft Elementary School (now Guy K. Stump Elementary School). Today, Stuart Draft High School serves 720 students in grades 9 to 12. Spotswood High School is a high school in Penn Laird, Virginia, in shadow of the Massanutten Peak. As of 2008, it competes in the Virginia High School League. History Spotswood High School had its formal beginning in 1973 when the County School Board authorized an Eastern Rockingham building study and requested a report on a proposed new high school for eastern Rockingham County.
