Valladolid International Film Festival
The Valladolid International Film Festival, popularly known as Seminci (short for ; ), is a film festival held annually in Valladolid, Spain. First held in 1956 as ('Valladolid Religious Film Week'), the Seminci is one of the longest-standing film festivals in Spain. It stands out in the area of films d'auteur and independent films. The Seminci conventionally takes place every October, about a month later than the San Sebastián Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in Spain. History The first edition of the festival began on 20 March 1956 under the name of Semana de Cine Religioso de Valladolid with a goal of promoting Catholic moral values in conjunction with the celebration of Holy Week in Valladolid. For the first two years it was not competitive and no prizes were awarded. Valladolid () is a Municipalities of Spain, municipality in Spain and the primary seat of government and de facto capital of the Autonomous communities of Spain, autonomous community of Castile and León. It is also the capital of the province of Valladolid, province of the same name. It has a population around 300,000 people (2021 est.). Population figures from 1 January 2013. The city is located roughly in the centre of the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula's Meseta Central, at the confluence of the Pisuerga River, Pisuerga and Esgueva rivers before they join the Duero, surrounded by winegrowing areas. ''Sweet Sixteen'' is a 2002 Drama (film and television), drama film directed by Ken Loach. Set in Scotland, the film tells the story of Liam, a teenage boy from a troubled background who dreams of starting afresh with his mother as soon as she has completed her prison term. Liam's attempts to raise money for the two of them are set against the backdrop of the Inverclyde towns of Greenock, Port Glasgow and the coast at Gourock. ''No Return'' ( es, Sin retorno, links=no) is a 2010 Spanish-Argentine thriller drama film directed by Miguel Cohan which stars Leonardo Sbaraglia, Martín Slipak and Bárbara Goenaga alongside Federico Luppi. Plot The plot tracks the developments after a cyclist (Pablo) is hit by a car with young Matías and Chaucha inside. Pablo's father Víctor looks for witnesses and ventriloquist Federico eventually gets wrongfully jailed. ''Certified Copy'' (french: Copie conforme) is a 2010 art film written and directed by Abbas Kiarostami. Set in Tuscany, the film focuses on a British writer ( William Shimell) and a French antiques dealer (Juliette Binoche), whose relationship undergoes an odd transformation over the course of a day. The film was a French-majority production, with co-producers in Italy and Belgium. The dialogue is in English, French and Italian. ''Certified Copy'' premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where Binoche won the Best Actress Award for her performance.
