Valentine Waltz
Valentine Waltz (foaled 14 February 1996) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners. Background Valentine Waltz was a bay mare bred in Ireland by the County Limerick-based Kilfrush Stud. As a yearling she was consigned to the Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sales on 1 October and was bought for 75,000 guineas by Kern/Lillingston Associates. ... Tattersalls
Tattersalls (formerly Tattersall's) is the main auctioneer of race horses in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Founding It was founded in 1766 by Richard Tattersall (1724–1795), who had been stud groom to the second Duke of Kingston. The first premises occupied were near Hyde Park Corner, in what was then the outskirts of London. Two "Subscription rooms" were reserved for members of the Jockey Club, and they became the rendezvous for sporting and betting men. Among the famous dispersal sales conducted by "Old Tatt" were those of the Duke of Kingston's stud in 1774 and of the stud of the Prince of Wales (afterwards George IV) in 1786. The prince often visited Richard Tattersall, and was joint proprietor with him of the ''Morning Post'' for several years. Bikala
Bikala (12 March 1978 – 25 December 1994) was an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Having been bought very cheaply as a yearling he developed into a top-class middle-distance performer and was rated among the best horses in Europe at three and four years of age. He won the Prix du Jockey Club in 1981 and Prix Ganay in 1982 as well as finishing second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. He was retired to stud at the end of 1982 and had some success as a sire of winners. Background Bikala was, a big, strong bay horse with a narrow white stripe, bred in Ireland. He was sired by Kalamoun who won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix Lupin the Prix Jacques Le Marois in 1973 before becoming a successful breeding stallion. Last Tycoon (9 May 1983 – 27 May 2006) was an Irish bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the Breeders' Cup Mile and as a leading sire in Australia. Background Last Tycoon was bred in Ireland by his owner Richard C. Strauss's Kilfrush Stud Ltd. Racing career He was trained by Robert Collet from his base at Chantilly Racecourse. At age two Last Tycoon won three of his six starts including the Prix d'Arenberg at Chantilly. At age three the colt won two conditions races in England and two in France before being sent to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California for the Breeders' Cup Mile. Matron Stakes (Belmont Park)
The Matron Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the fall season at Belmont Park, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) track in Elmont, Long Island, New York. It is open to two-year-old fillies and is the filly counterpart to the Belmont Futurity Stakes. The Matron Stakes was run over a straight course before 1959, with the exception of 1941. On The House (20 March 1979 – 1999) was a British-bred, British-trined Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic 1000 Guineas in 1982. She was one of the best British two-year-old fillies of 1981 when she won two races and finished second in the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following spring she ran poorly in her first race but then recorded an upset victory in the 169th running of the 1000 Guineas. After being beaten in her next two races she again upset the odds by winning the all-aged Sussex Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare and is the female-line ancestor of Cracksman. Luth Enchantee (foaled 1980) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who was named the best horse in Europe over one mile in 1983. Her early career was undistinguished, as she won one minor event in her first eight races. In the summer of her three-year-old season she made rapid improvement, winning the Prix d'Astarte against her own sex and then defeating male opposition to win France's two most important all-aged mile races, the Prix Jacques Le Marois and the Prix du Moulin. In autumn she was moved up in distance and finished a close third to All Along in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Her subsequent racing career was disappointing as she finished unplaced in her remaining seven starts. She made little impact as a broodmare. Pentire (12 April 1992 – 20 November 2017) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Pentire was bred by Lord Halifax, he was purchased for 54,000 guineas by Mollers Racing, the racing stable Trust of brothers Eric and Budgie Moller. Racing career Trained by Geoff Wragg, at age two Pentire's best result in a conditions race was a third in the Richmond Stakes. At age three in 1995, the colt had an outstanding year that included twice beating the brilliant runner, Singspiel. Assert (17 April 1979 – 14 September 1995) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was beaten by Golden Fleece on his debut but went on to win the Beresford Stakes. In the following year he won four Group One races: the French Derby, Irish Derby, Benson & Hedges Gold Cup and Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. He was rated the best middle-distance horse in Europe in 1982 by Timeform. He was retired to stud at the end of his three-year-old season and became a successful sire of winners. Vincent O'Brien
Vincent O'Brien (9 April 1917 – 1 June 2009) was an Irish horse racing, race horse horse trainer, trainer from Churchtown, County Cork, Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland. In 2003 he was voted the greatest influence in horse racing history in a worldwide poll hosted by the ''Racing Post''. In earlier ''Racing Post'' polls he was voted the best ever trainer of National Hunt racing, national hunt and of flat race, flat racehorses. Waterford Crystal Mile
The Celebration Mile is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late August. History The event was established in 1967, and it was originally called the Wills Mile. It was renamed the Goodwood Mile in 1971, and from this point it was classed at Group 3 level. The race became known as the Waterford Crystal Mile in 1975, and it was promoted to Group 2 status in 1977. It was given its present title in 1989. The leading horses from the Celebration Mile often go on to compete in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. The last to win both in the same year was Poet's Voice in 2010.
