Vale of Dryfe F.C. was an association football club from Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, active at the turn of the 20th century. History The club was formed at a meeting on 16 November 1896, to provide a Scottish Junior Football Association, Junior club for the town, after the demise of the original Mid-Annandale F.C. (1877), Mid-Annandale club; William Gardner was elected first captain. Its first competitive football came in the Southern Counties Cup, which it entered in 1896–97, and it lost 5–1 to Dumfries Thistle in a replay of its first tie. The Vale protested that Thistle's Gordon was Cup-tied for having played for the 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers F.C., 5th K.R.V. in the Scottish Cup, in vain. The Vale was one of the ten clubs to sign up for the new South of Scotland Football League, Southern Counties League in June 1897, but it withdrew before the competition started. Maxwelltown ( gd, Ceann Drochaid, IPA: ˆkʰʲaun̴̪ˈt̪ɾɔxÉ™tʲ was formerly a burgh of barony and police burgh and by the time of the burgh's abolition in 1929 it was the most populous burgh in the county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. In 1929 Maxwelltown was merged with the neighbouring burgh of Dumfries. Maxwelltown lies to the west of the River Nith, which forms the historic boundary between Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire. Maxwelltown was a hamlet known as Bridgend up until 1810, in which year it was made into a burgh of barony under its present name, later becoming a police burgh in 1833. Maxwelltown comprises several suburbs, including Summerhill, Troqueer, Janefield, Lochside, Lincluden, Sandside, and Summerville. Angus Douglas (1 January 1889 – 14 December 1918) was a Scottish professional footballer who made over 140 appearances in the Football League for Chelsea and Newcastle United as an outside right. He was capped by Scotland at international level. Club career A "tricky" outside right, Douglas began his career in Scotland with hometown club Lochmaben and transferred to Dumfries in 1906. In 1908, he moved to England to join First Division club Chelsea. He made 103 appearances and scored 11 goals in four-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge and was a part of the club's 1911–12 Second Division promotion-winning team. After failing to appear at all during the early months of the 1913–14 season, Douglas transferred to First Division club Newcastle United in November 1913.
