Valby, Oregon
Valby is an unincorporated community in Morrow County, Oregon, United States. Valby is the site of a Swedish Lutheran church, built in 1897 by settlers of Swedish descent north of Eightmile. The place name ' or ' is Swedish for a ''community of sheepherders''. Eightmile is along Oregon Route 206 between Condon and Heppner. In 1983, an article in ''The Oregonian ''The Oregonian'' is a daily newspaper based in Portland, Oregon, United States, owned by Advance Publications. It is the oldest continuously published newspaper on the West Coast of the United States, U.S. West Coast, founded as a weekly by Tho ...'' described the church and congregation as they were then. About 35 people, many of them descendants of the church founders, were traveling from as far away as to attend Sunday services conducted by a pastor from Heppner. Heppner, Oregon
Heppner is a city in and the county seat of Morrow County, Oregon, United States. As of 2010, the population was 1,291. Heppner is part of the Pendleton-Hermiston Micropolitan Area. Heppner is named after Henry Heppner, a prominent Jewish-American businessman. History Native American settlement Native Americans lived and traveled along the land between the Columbia Gorge and the Blue Mountains for more than 10,000 years prior to European-American settlement. Ancient petroglyphs have been found approximately 45 miles (72 km.) north of Heppner in Irrigon and Boardman. Condon, Oregon
Condon is a city in and the county seat of Gilliam County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 682 at the 2010 census. The city, with an historic main street along Oregon Route 19, is a farming and ranching community. The John Day River/Cottonwood Canyon State Park, the ghost town of Lonerock and the John Day Fossil Beds are all a short drive from Historic Condon. History Condon was the southern terminus of the Condon Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1883, a local homesteader named Potter platted the land around a spring on his property. The spring, which emerged from a bed of black basalt, was known to pioneer ranchers in the area as ''Summit Springs''. Oregon Route 206 is an Oregon state highway located in the north-central part of the state. It runs from Interstate 84 at Celilo Village to a junction with Oregon Route 74 and Oregon Route 207 in Heppner. Aside from Interstate 84, Oregon Route 206 is the main east–west highway in Gilliam County and provides access from the Portland metropolitan area to the John Day area.
