Val-d'Or
Val-d'Or ( , , ; meaning "Golden Valley" or "Valley of Gold") is a city in Quebec, Canada with a population of 32,752 inhabitants according to the 2021 Canadian census. The city is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region near La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. The Algonquin toponym of the town is ''Ozawaconia Odena''. History Gold was discovered in the area in 1923. The name of the town is French for "Valley of Gold." While gold is still mined in the area today, base metals, such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) have become increasingly important resources. The ore is usually found in volcanic rocks that were deposited on the sea floor over 2.7 billion years ago. They are referred to as volcanic-hosted (or volcanogenic) massive sulphide deposits ( VMS). Val-d'Or Foreurs
The are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Val-d'Or, in the region of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. They play in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, one of the three component leagues of the Canadian Hockey League. The team name, Val-d'Or Foreurs, translates to the "Valley of Gold Drillers"; this name references the drilling operations associated with mining and exploration which are a major source of blue-collar work in the area. Abitibi-Témiscamingue () is an administrative region located in western Québec, Canada, along the border with Ontario. It became part of the province in 1898. It has a land area of and its population was 147,082 people as of the 2021 census. Cité De L'Or
The ''Cité de l'Or'' ("The City of Gold") is an attraction located in Val-d'Or, in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada. It has been operating since 1995 as a place where people can see what gold mining was like by touring the underground Lamaque gold mine and the Bourlamaque historic mining village. Bourlamaque was declared a provincial historic site in 1979 and a National Historic Site in 2012. In 1923, the gold deposit was discovered and in 1935, the mine came in operation. In 1985, it was exhausted and closed. Since 2000, one stage of the '' Tour de l'Abitibi'' takes place in the underground mine, some below ground. Cyclists must ride through the tunnels and up the access ramp (a 17% slope) before they race through the streets of Val-d'Or. La Vallée-de-l'Or () is a regional county municipality in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region in Northwestern Quebec, Canada. The seat is in Val-d'Or. It is named for its gold deposits in the Harricana River and Bell River valleys. History Originally part of Abitibi RCM, it was created in April 1981 as Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality. The name, adjusted to La Vallée-de-l'Or on October 11, 2003, means "The Valley of Gold" and refers to the area at the sources of the Harricana River where the Abitibi gold rush took place in the 1930s. Lac-Simon () is a First Nations reserve (also known as Simosagigan) and lake in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec located south-east of Val-d'Or.
