Vaitoti Tupa
Vaitoti Tupa (born 23 July 1957) is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. He is the son of former MP Ngai Tupa. Tupa was born on Rarotonga and educated at Avarua School and Tereora College. He later attended the University of the South Pacific, graduating with an MBA. Trained as a surveyor, he worked as a public servant in the Survey Department. In 2000 he was appointed as the director of the National Environment Services. He was reappointed to the position in 2009, but a report from the national audit office subsequently found that the reappointment decision had been unduly influenced by his mother and had been made on the basis of political interest, not merit. Disagreement over the appointment had led to a cabinet reshuffle, with the environment portfolio been removed from Kete Ioane by Prime Minister Jim Marurai and given to Ngamau Munokoa so that she could make the appointment. Matavera (electorate)
Matavera is a Cook Islands electoral division returning one member to the Cook Islands Parliament. The electorate was created in 1981, when the ''Constitution Amendment (No. 9) Act 1980–1981'' adjusted electorate boundaries and split the electorate of Takitumu into three. Ngamau Munokoa
Ngamau Mere Munokoa (born 13 August 1944), also known as "Aunty Mau", is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet Minister. She was the third woman ever elected to the Cook Islands Parliament, the second appointed to Cabinet, and the first to hold the post of Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister. She is a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. Early life Munokoa was born in Rarotonga and attended Arorangi, Avarua and Nikao Primary schools and Tereora College. She trained for clerical work in Auckland, New Zealand in the hope of becoming a teacher, but returned to the Cook Islands in 1962 to open a shop. Political career Munokoa first ran for Parliament in 1994, but was unsuccessful. She was elected in the 1996 Nikao–Panama by-election, defeating then-Cook Islands Party candidate Tina Browne. 2022 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 1 August 2022. A referendum on legalising medical cannabis was held on the same day. Background In the 2018 general election, the Democratic Party won a plurality with 11 seats but fell short of the 13 required to form a government. The incumbent Cook Islands Party (CIP), led by then-prime minister Henry Puna won 10 seats; the One Cook Islands Movement (OCI) secured a single seat, and independents won the remaining two. The CIP remained in government due to the support of the OCI and independents. In October 2020, Puna resigned as prime minister to run for secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum. Deputy prime minister Mark Brown succeeded Puna as prime minister and leader of the Cook Islands Party. Brown appointed Robert Tapaitau deputy prime minister. Tai Tura
Tutai Tura (born 3 October 1949) is a Cook Islands politician and former member of the Cook Islands Parliament. Since March 2021 he has been Speaker of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the Cook Islands Party. Tura was born on Rarotonga, and educated at Avarua School and Tereora College. He trained as an electrician and worked for the government on Mauke. He was first elected to Parliament at the 2010 election. Shortly after his election he called for wage increases to counteract the higher cost of living in Mauke. In 2015 he was appointed Associate Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration. In April 2019 Tura was appointed Deputy Speaker. In June 2020 he attempted to ban a ''Cook Islands News'' journalist from Parliament over a story about MPs' allowances. 2018 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 14 June 2018 to elect the 24 members of the 15th Cook Islands Parliament. The nationalist, Cook Islands Party, led by the Prime Minister, Henry Puna, attempted to win a third consecutive term in government. However, the elections resulted in a hung parliament, with the opposition Democratic Party led by Tina Browne becoming the largest party, although Browne failed to win a seat, losing in Rakahanga constituency. The Democratic Party won 11 seats, the Cook Islands Party 10 seats, One Cook Islands Movement one seat, with independent candidates winning two seats. Jim Marurai
Jim Marurai (9 July 1947 – November 2020) was a Cook Islands politician who served as Prime Minister of the Cook Islands. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Personal life Marurai was born in Ivirua, Mangaia. He attended Ivirua and Oneroa Primary school and then Tereora College on Rarotonga and Napier Boys' High School in New Zealand. He later studied to be a teacher at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Marurai's wife, Tuaine Marurai, died on 14 September 2005 in Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 56 after suffering from cancer. She was buried on her home island of Mangaia. In March 2020 Marurai went missing from his home but was found after two days. He died in the first week of November 2020 in his home in Ivirua. Kiriau Turepu
Kiriau Turepu is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is a member of the Cook Islands Party. Turepu was educated at Northland College in New Zealand. He represented the Cook Islands in tennis at the 1971 South Pacific Games in Papeete, Tahiti. Turepu was first elected to Parliament in the 2006 Matavera by-election. As a result, the government lost its majority and dissolved Parliament to avoid a confidence vote. He was unsuccessful in the ensuing 2006 election, but was re-elected at the 2010 election.
