Western Armenian ( Classical spelling: , ) is one of the two standardized forms of Modern Armenian, the other being Eastern Armenian. It is based mainly on the Istanbul Armenian dialect, as opposed to Eastern Armenian, which is mainly based on the Yerevan Armenian dialect. Until the early 20th century, various Western Armenian dialects were also spoken in the Ottoman Empire, especially in the eastern regions historically populated by Armenians known as Western Armenia. Vagharshak Varnazi Harutiunyan ( hy, Վաղարշակ Վառնազի Հարությունյան; born 28 April 1956) is an Armenian military figure and politician currently serving as Armenia's ambassador to Russia. He previously served as the Defence Minister of Armenia from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2020 to 2021. Early life Harutiunyan was born in Akhalkalaki, Georgian SSR (now Georgia), a region with a large Armenian population. Military career Soviet Army and CIS service He graduated from the Caspian Higher Naval School in 1978. From 1978 to 1989, he fought in the Soviet–Afghan War. Vagharshak Kosyan is an Armenian-Abkhazian military leader and politician. During the War in Abkhazia, he was commander of the Bagramyan Battalion. Kosyan was awarded the Hero of Abkhazia title, the highest state award of Abkhazia, for his services. He is a former Deputy Speaker of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia. Biography His family came from Ordu and took refugee in Abkhazia during the Armenian genocide. He was the first secretary of the Gagra Komsomol during the Soviet period. During the War in Abkhazia, Kosyan organized the creation of the Armenian motorized infantry Bagramyan Battalion within the Abkhazian separatist army. Arshak III, also known as Arsaces III, Arsak III and Arshak III-Vagharshak ( hy, Արշակ Գ, flourished 4th century – died 387), was a prince who served as a Roman client king of Arsacid Armenia from 378 until 387. Arshak III is often known as the last serving Roman client king of Armenia. During his reign, the part of Armenia that Arshak III governed was under Roman rule from the Peace of Acilisene.
