Vadstena Academy
Vadstena Academy (Swedish: Vadstena-Akademien, full name Stiftelsen internationella Vadstena-Akademien), is a music academy founded in 1964 by opera pedagogue Ingrid Maria Rappe (1915–1994) and based in the small city of Vadstena in Sweden. The academy is a major commissioner of new operas and most of the new operas in Sweden are performed at Vadstena Academy. Activity The academy's mission is to conduct training courses, particularly in classical singing, and to perform older and newly written operas or dramatic musical theatre. Musical drama performances are performed annually, usually in Vadstena's Old Theater or in the wedding room at Vadstena Castle during the summer months. A considerable amount of research is carried out under the auspices of the academy about older music and drama, and many Baroque operas have been revived by the academy. Carl Johan "Loa" Falkman (born 24 July 1947) is a Swedish opera singer, actor and artist. Baroque Music
Baroque music ( or ) refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period, and was followed in turn by the Classical period after a short transition, the galant style. The Baroque period is divided into three major phases: early, middle, and late. Overlapping in time, they are conventionally dated from 1580 to 1650, from 1630 to 1700, and from 1680 to 1750. ''Per-Erik'' Lennart Öhrn (born 18 October 1946) is a Swedish opera and theatre director, opera singer, actor, professor, translator and Artistic Director. Öhrn grew up in Malmö and trained as an opera singer (baritone) at the School of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg. He has worked as an actor at Östgötateatern in Linköping and Linköping, at Uppsala Stadsteater and as a singer and director of Stora Teatern in Gothenburg and at Norrlandsoperan in Umeå. Arnold Östman
Arnold Östman (born December 24, 1939) is a Swedish conductor and music director. Early life Born in Malmö, Sweden, Östman studied art history and musicology at Lund, Paris and Stockholm. As a musician, he concentrated on the piano and the harpsichord, being largely self-taught. During his years as a researcher, he focused on the subject of early opera, bringing to light a number of theretofore unknown or little-known baroque operas. Östman was a teacher at the Operahögskolan i Stockholm (then called the ') in 1969. He was theatre and museum director at the Drottningholms Teatermuseum (later known as Sveriges Teatermuseum) in Stockholm starting in 1979. Hanna Tove Dahlberg (born April 25, 1973 in Stockholm) is a Swedish mezzo-soprano opera singer, active on the international opera scene. In 2005 Dahlberg was one of a group of world-class musicians who were permitted to perform inside a building at Auschwitz for the first time ever during the filming of the International Emmy Award winning TV documentary ''Holocaust: A Music Memorial Film''. Anne Sofie von Otter (born 9 May 1955) is a Swedish mezzo-soprano. Her repertoire encompasses lieder, operas, oratorios and also rock and pop songs. Early life Von Otter was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Her father was Göran von Otter, a Swedish diplomat in Berlin during World War II. She grew up in Bonn, London and Stockholm. Sara Magdalena Ernman (born 4 November 1970) is a Swedish opera singer. Besides operas and operettas, she has also performed chansons, cabaret, jazz, and appeared in musicals. The Music Academy is a classical music training program in Montecito in Santa Barbara County, California. Overview The academy hosts an annual eight-week summer music festival, highlighted by concerts and workshops directed by famous composers, conductors, and artists. Nina Stemme
Nina Maria Stemme (born Nina Maria Thöldte on 11 May 1963) is a Swedish dramatic soprano opera singer. Stemme "is regarded by today's opera fans as our era's greatest Wagnerian soprano".
