Vacherie
Vacherie is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in St. James Parish, Louisiana, St. James Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area . The name of the place derives from the :wikt:vacherie, French word for ''cowshed''. On the SW side of the community is the WZRH/KVDU-Tower, a guyed mast noted as the tallest tower in the state of Louisiana. The best known location in the community is the Oak Alley Plantation. There are several other historic Plantations in the American South, plantations in the area: Laura Plantation, Laura, Desire Plantation, Desire, St. Joseph Plantation, St. Joseph, and Felicity Plantation, Felicity. North Vacherie, Louisiana
North Vacherie is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. James Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,411 at the 2000 census. Vacherie was noted in the 2000 census as being the town with the least mobility of all in the United States. Geography North Vacherie is located at (29.993379, -90.714089). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.6 square miles (30.1 km), of which 11.0 square miles (28.5 km) is land and 0.6 square mile (1.6 km) (5.25%) is water. North Vacherie is known more popularly amongst locals as "Front Vacherie." Officially, both North Vacherie and South Vacherie are known overall as "Vacherie." Laura Plantation
Laura Plantation is a restored historic Louisiana Creole plantation on the west bank of the Mississippi River near Vacherie, Louisiana, (U.S.), open for guided tours. Formerly known as Duparc Plantation, it is significant for its early 19th-century Créole-style raised big house and several surviving outbuildings, including two slave cabins. It is one of only 15 plantation complexes in Louisiana with this many complete structures. Because of its historical importance, the plantation is on the National Register of Historic Places. The site, in St. James Parish, Louisiana, is also included on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. Alcée Fortier, who later became Professor of Romance Languages and folklore at Tulane University, was said to have collected Louisiana Creole versions of the West African Br'er Rabbit stories here in the 1870s. KVDU
KVDU (104.1 FM, "104.1 The Spot") is a commercial adult hits radio station licensed to Houma, Louisiana; it has announced intentions to change the city of license to the nearby city of Gonzales. Owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., the station serving both the New Orleans and Baton Rouge metropolitan areas. The KVDU studios are located in the Central Business District of New Orleans, while the transmitter resides in nearby South Vacherie. History When 104.1 originally signed on the air on November 15, 1968, it was KHOM, with the call sign reflecting its Houma city of license. It broadcast from a 350-foot antenna, only targeting the Houma area. In 1989, it moved its transmitter atop the 2,000-foot tower in Vacherie used by WCKW-FM (now WZRH). Oak Alley Plantation is a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in the community of Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana, U.S. ''Oak Alley'' is named for its distinguishing visual feature, an alley (French ''allée'') or canopied path, created by a double row of southern live oak trees about 800 feet (240 meters) long, planted in the early 18th century — long before the present house was built. Felicity Plantation
Felicity Plantation is a historic sugarcane plantation on the banks of the Mississippi River in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is located along Louisiana Highway 18 in Vacherie, St. James Parish. Felicity is a sister plantation to St. Joseph Plantation, and was built around 1846 (or 1850) by Valcour Aime as a wedding gift to his daughter, Felicite Emma, and her spouse, Septime Fortier, who was also her cousin. Acquired by a bank in 1873, the plantation was purchased by Saturnine Waguespack in 1890, who merged it with the St. Joseph Plantation to form the St. Joseph Plantation and Manufacturing Company.
