Va'aiga Tukuitonga
Va'aiga Paotama Tukuitonga is a Niuean politician and former Cabinet Minister. She is member of the Niue Assembly for the village of Alofi North. Tukuitonga was educated at Victoria University of Wellington. She has previously worked as a Justice of Peace, public servant, and schoolteacher. She was first elected to the Assembly in the 1999 elections, defeating sitting Premier Frank Lui in his own seat. She was re-elected at the 2002 and 2005 elections, and appointed to the Cabinet of Young Vivian as Minister of Education after the latter. She was elected unopposed at the 2008 election. In 2013 Tukuitonga blamed Niue's falling population on the use of contraception. 2023 Niuean General Election
General elections were held in Niue on 29 April 2023. The elections were originally planned to be held early, in late February or early March. Eight new MPs and six women were elected. Following the elections the Assembly elected Dalton Tagelagi as Premier. Electoral system The 20 members of the Assembly are elected by two methods; 14 are elected from single-member consistencies using first-past-the-post voting and six are elected from a single nationwide constituency by multiple non-transferable vote. There are currently no political parties. After the election, the Members of the Assembly elect a Speaker of the Assembly from outside parliament, and a Premier, who must be an MP. The Premier then chooses a Cabinet. In 2023, the candidate nomination fee was increased from NZ$11 to NZ$200. Niue
Niue (, ; niu, Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue is located in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It is 604 kilometres northeast of Tonga. The island is commonly referred to as "The Rock", which comes from the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia". Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. 2008 Niuean General Election
General elections were held in Niue on 7 June, 2008. They were initially expected to be held in April, but were delayed until June 2008. Niue has a 20-member legislative assembly, called the Niue Assembly, whose members are elected by approximately 600 registered voters. The assembly consists of 20 total members, 6 elected on a common roll and 14 representatives of the villages Election management The election was managed and controlled by the Chief Electoral Officer, Togia Sioneholo, who is also the Secretary of the Niue Department of Justice, Lands and Survey. However, since Sioneholo was also a candidate, he had to go on leave as required by the Niue Public Service Regulations.
