VMF-511
Marine Fighting Squadron 511 (VMF-511) was a fighter squadron of the Marine Corps and Marine Forces Reserve during World War II and the Cold War which flew aircraft types such as the F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, and the F-8 Crusader. They were originally activated during World War II and fought during the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Balikpapan (1945). They specialized in close air support and during the course of the war were credited with only one plane shot down. Following the surrender of Japan, the squadron was deactivated on March 11, 1946. They were reactivated in the Marine Forces Reserve and were based out of Naval Air Station Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. The squadron's tailcode was originally ''7W'', then in 1970 it became ''5W'', and then in 1972 it changed to ''MK''. Operation Crossbow (Project Danny)
Project Danny was a World War II plan for United States Marine Corps F4U Corsair fighter aircraft to attack German V-1 flying bomb launch sites in northern France. Although the squadrons had been trained at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and were loading onto their escort carriers for the trip to the North Atlantic, opposition from General Marshall meant that the operation was canceled before departing for the European Theater. Marine Attack Squadron 233 (VMA-233) was an A-4 Skyhawk attack squadron in the United States Marine Corps. The squadron, also known as the “Flying Deadheads”, were part of the Marine Forces Reserve and were based at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia until their decommissioning in 1969. Originally activated during World War II, they fought in many areas of the Pacific War including the Battle of Guadalcanal as part of the Cactus Air Force, the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Balikpapan (1945). They were the only Marine Corps squadron to have three commanding officers killed during the course of the war and were credited with downing 8 Japanese aircraft. Marine Corps Outlying Field Oak Grove
Marine Corps Outlying Field Oak Grove is an auxiliary airport of the United States Marine Corps located near Pollocksville, North Carolina. It was opened on 4 May 1943 during World War II as an outlying field of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. During the war numerous fighter squadrons to include VMF-321 and VMF-323 trained at Oak Grove prior to deploying. After the war, Oak Grove and Marine Corps Auxiliary Airfield Kinston were the MCAS Cherry Point outlying fields to remain open. On 15 June 1947 Oak Grove became a permanent OLF of Cherry Point and today is used for helicopter, tilt-rotor and AV-8B Harrier training. USS ''Block Island'' (CVE-106) (then LPH-1 and CVE-106 again) was a of the United States Navy. She was the second ship to carry her name, done in honor of the first one, being launched 12 days after the original was sunk. She was launched on 10 June 1944 as ''Sunset Bay'' by Todd-Pacific Shipyards, Inc. Tacoma, Washington; sponsored by Mrs. E. J. (Grace) Hallenbeck (mother of Major Pappy Boyington, then a Prisoner of War of the Japanese), and commissioned as ''Block Island'' on 30 December 1944. The V-1 flying bomb (german: Vergeltungswaffe 1 "Vengeance Weapon 1") was an early cruise missile. Its official Ministry of Aviation (Nazi Germany), Reich Aviation Ministry () designation was Fi 103. It was also known to the Allies as the buzz bomb or doodlebug and in Germany as (cherry stone) or (maybug). The V-1 was the first of the (V-weapons) deployed for the terror bombing of London.
