Fighter Squadron 173 or VF-173 was an aviation unit of the United States Navy established on 11 August 1948 and disestablished on 1 February 1959. Operational history VF-173 was the first squadron equipped with the North American FJ-2/-3 Fury, FJ-3 Fury replacing its Grumman F-9 Cougar, F9F-6 Cougars in late 1954, VF-173 completed the carrier qualification of the FJ-3 aboard in early 1955. VF-173 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing Seventeen, Carrier Air Group 17 (CVG-17) which was assigned to the from 1956 to 1958. In September 1957, VF-173 participated in Operation Deep Water. Operation Deep Water
Operation Deep Water was a 1957 NATO naval exercise held in the Mediterranean Sea that simulated protecting the Dardanelles from a Soviet invasion. By controlling this bottleneck in a war situation, the Soviet Black Sea Fleet would be prevented from entering the Mediterranean. Operation Deep Water was part of a series of NATO military exercises that took place in Fall 1957. This exercise featured a simulated nuclear air strike in the Gallipoli area, reflecting NATO's nuclear umbrella policy to offset the Soviet Union's numerical superiority of ground forces in Europe. North American FJ-2/-3 Fury
The North American FJ-2 and FJ-3 Fury are a series of swept-wing carrier-capable fighters for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The FJ-2 resulted from an effort to navalize the North American F-86 Sabre operated by the United States Air Force.
