The Bombing Fighting Squadron One, designated as Bombing Fighter Squadron VBF-1 and known as " The Royal Flushers", was formed at the Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nevada in December 1944 and commissioned on 2 January 1945, to become the fourth squadron in the Veteran Air Group One. Following Japan's surrender and the end of World War II in the Pacific, VBF-1 was disbanded on 1 November 1945. VBF is a United States Navy acronym for Bombing Fighter Squadron. A squadron military unit that used aircraft that could be used both as a fighter aircraft and bomber. During World War II the Vought F4U Corsair was one of the main aircraft used in this role as the Corsair was an excellent fighter aircraft that could carry up to 4,000 pounds (1,800 kg) of bombs. F4U Corsairs
The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft which saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Designed and initially manufactured by Chance Vought, the Corsair was soon in great demand; additional production contracts were given to Goodyear, whose Corsairs were designated FG, and Brewster, designated F3A. The Corsair was designed and operated as a carrier-based aircraft, and entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy in late 1944 and early 1945. It quickly became one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of World War II. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II and its naval aviators achieved an 11:1 kill ratio. Early problems with carrier landings and logistics led to it being eclipsed as the dominant carrier-based fighter by the Grumman F6F Hellcat, powered by the same Double Wasp engine first flown on the Corsair's initial prototype in 1940. USS Bennington (CV-20)
USS ''Bennington'' (CV/CVA/CVS-20) was an in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and from 1952 to 1970. She was sold for scrap in 1994. History Construction and commissioning USS ''Bennington'' was named for a battle in 1777 near Bennington, Vermont, during the American Revolutionary War, in which American victory contributed to the ultimate defeat of General Burgoyne at Saratoga. The carrier was laid down on 15 December 1942 by the New York Naval Shipyard and launched on 26 February 1944, sponsored by the wife of Congressman Melvin Maas of Minnesota. She was commissioned on 6 August 1944, Captain James B. Sykes in command. World War II ''Bennington'' completed trials, shakedown training, and post-shakedown availability by 14 December when she departed New York and headed for the Pacific theater. Japanese Battleship Nagato
, named for Nagato Province, was a super-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Completed in 1920 as the lead ship of her class, she carried supplies for the survivors of the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923. The ship was modernized in 1934–1936 with improvements to her armor and machinery and a rebuilt superstructure in the pagoda mast style. ''Nagato'' briefly participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and was the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She covered the withdrawal of the attacking ships and did not participate in the attack itself. Other than participating in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where she did not see combat, the ship spent most of the first two years of the Pacific War training in home waters.
