V. S. De S. Wikramanayake
Vincent Stuart de Silva Wikramanayake CBE, JPUM, (1876-1953) was Ceylonese lawyer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Council (1924-1931) and State Council of Ceylon (1931-1935). Vincent Stuart de Silva Wikramanayake, was born on 18 December 1876, the youngest son of Charles Edward Wikramanayake (1843-1936) and Emilia Beth Sooriarachchi née Amarasekara. At the fourth Legislative Council election held on 27 September 1924 he was elected as an unofficial member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon, representing the Southern Province East. He defeating G. K. W. Perera, a barrister from Colombo. Perera won the initial vote but demanded a recount as he believed he had secured a greater majority of votes only to lose to Wikramanayake by 17 votes. At the first State Council election in 1931, the election for the seat of Hambantota was held on the 13 June 1931 with only two candidates. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Galle ( si, ගාල්ල, translit=Gālla; ta, காலி, translit=Kāli) (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the capital of Galle District. Galle was known as ''Gimhathiththa'' before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Ceylonese Mudaliyars
Mudali (or Mudaliyar) was a colonial title and office in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) which was part of the native headman system. The Portuguese colonials created the Mudaliyar class in the 17th century by enlisting natives of different castes from the coastal areas. The Dutch continued the practice of the Portuguese. This class used the ''Mudali'' as a hereditary title, however the British re-established a Mudaliyar class, with appointments that had the title of Mudali, this process was stopped in the 1930s when the Native Department of the British government of Ceylon was closed down. All official and titular appointments of Mudaliyars were made by the Governor of Ceylon. Appointments were non-transferable and usually hereditary, made to locals from wealthy influential families loyal to the British Crown.
