Utah State Route 16
State Route 16 (SR-16) is a state highway in northeastern Utah, running for in Rich County from the Wyoming state line near Woodruff to Sage Creek Junction. It serves as part of a road from Evanston, Wyoming to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Route description SR-16 begins at the Wyoming state line south of Woodruff, as an extension of WYO 89, and heads northwest to Woodruff, where it turns north through the town center. SR-16 then continues north to Randolph, running through the town center. North of Randolph, it runs generally north-northeast to end at an intersection with SR-30 at Sage Creek Junction. History A 1921 law added the portion of the road from Evanston, Wyoming to Montpelier, Idaho in Utah to the state highway system, as well as the branch towards Kemmerer, Wyoming. Woodruff is a town in Rich County, Utah, United States. The population was 180 at the 2010 census. History The first settlement at Woodruff was made in 1870. A post office called Woodruff has been in operation since 1872. The town was named in honor of Wilford Woodruff, fourth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square mile (1.4 km2), all land. U.S. Route 30 or U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) is an east–west main route in the system of the United States Numbered Highways, with the highway traveling across the northern tier of the country. With a length of , it is the third longest U.S. highway, after US 20 and US 6. U.S. Route 89 (US 89) in the U.S. state of Utah is a north-south United States Highway spanning more than through the central part of the state, making it the longest road in Utah. Between Provo and Brigham City, US-89 serves as a local road, paralleling (and occasionally concurring with) Interstate 15, but the portions from Arizona north to Provo and Brigham City northeast to Wyoming serve separate corridors. It is the only highway signed as a Utah state route (with the beehive shaped route marker) to traverse the entire width of the state. Legislatively the highway exists as 3 separate segments. With implied connections via Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 89, the highway is drivable as a continuous route from Nevada to Wyoming. The western segment is a historic corridor paralleling the pre-Lucin Cutoff routing of the First transcontinental railroad. 1977 Renumbering (Utah)
In 1977, the Utah State Legislature changed its system of how state route numbers were used and assigned. Prior to 1977 Utah used a system where every U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway traversing the state was assigned a different Utah state route number. This state route number was not posted on signs, but was only used for legislative purposes, such as funding. There were many instances where having different route numbers for signing and legislative purposes could cause confusion. For example, the highway signed Interstate 15 in Utah was legislatively defined State Route 1, not route 15. State Route 15 also existed, but was a different route that passed through Zion National Park. In 1977, the state changed to a system where all highways would have the same legislative route number as its signed route number. Kemmerer, Wyoming
Kemmerer is the largest city in and the county seat of Lincoln County, Wyoming, United States. Its population was 2,656 at the 2010 census. History Explorer John C. Frémont discovered coal in the area during his second expedition in 1843. The Union Pacific Coal Company opened the first underground mine in 1881 after construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad from Granger to Oregon. Patrick J. Quealy (1857–1930) founded Kemmerer as an "independent town" in 1897 when he was vice-president of the Kemmerer Coal Company, located south of the original townsite. He named the company and town after his financial backer, Pennsylvania coal magnate Mahlon S. Kemmerer (1843–1925).
