There are two types of Utah State Legislature districts. Utah State Senate districts The state is divided into 29 Senate districts, each representing approximately 100,000 people (estimated in 2018 from 2010 census). Utah State Legislature
The Utah State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Utah. It is a bicameral body, comprising the Utah House of Representatives, with 75 state representatives, and the Utah Senate, with 29 state senators. There are no term limits for either chamber. The Legislature convenes at the Utah State Capitol in the state capital of Salt Lake City. In 2020, voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that changed the legislative start date from a constitutionally mandated fourth Monday of January to a date set by state law (thereby making it easier to change the start date if necessary). Current state law requires the start date of the Utah State Legislature to be the first Tuesday after the third Monday in January for an annual 45-day session. Luz Escamilla
Luz Robles Escamilla is the Senator for the Utah State Senate's 1st Districtmap, defeating Republican Carlton Christensen for the seat November 4, 2008 after having beaten incumbent Sen. Fred Fife for the party nomination earlier that year. Early life, education, and career The daughter of two Mexican college professors, Escamilla was born in 1978 and raised in Mexico. After moving to the United States in 1996, Escamilla graduated from Marian Catholic High School in San Diego, CA. She then earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Utah in business marketing in 2000. She also holds a Masters in Public Administration, which she earned from the University of Utah in 2005. Luz is married to former Arizona lawmaker Juan Carlos Escamilla. Derek Kitchen
Derek Kitchen (born August 30, 1988) is an American politician from Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a member of the Utah State Senate representing Utah's 2nd senate district, and formerly a Councilmember on the Salt Lake City Council representing Council District 4. Kitchen is also known for his appearance on Food Network's ''Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives.'' Education and career Kitchen graduated in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Utah. Kitchen and his partner, Moudi Sbeity, opened Laziz Foods in 2012 to provide Lebanese food to local grocery stores and the Farmers Market in Salt Lake City. Jani Iwamoto
Jani Iwamoto is a Democratic member of the Utah Senate, representing the 4th District since 2014. Previously she served as a council member of the Salt Lake County Council. Personal life, education, and career Iwamoto was born and raised in Salt Lake County. She graduated from Highland High School and got a degree in mass communications from the University of Utah. Karen Mayne is an American politician serving as a member of the Utah Senate from the 5th District. She assumed office on January 2, 2008, succeeding her husband, Ed Mayne. Kathleen Riebe ( ) is an American politician from Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of the Utah State Board of Education through 2018, and now represents Utah's 15th senate district in the Utah State Senate. Prior to redistricting she represented the 8th district. On May 31, 2023, she announced to KSL News Radio that she was running in the 2023 Utah's 2nd congressional district special election.
