The Uruguayan Championship of the Uruguayan Football Federation was a football tournament held in Uruguay between 1923 and 1925, during the schism of Uruguayan football. It was organized by the Uruguayan Football Federation ("Federación Uruguaya de Fútbol" – FUF), entity dissident of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), founded after the resignation of AUF of Peñarol and Central occurred during the 1922 Uruguayan championship. Only two tournaments (1923 and 1924) came to complete, since in 1925 the Uruguayan government intervention to achieve unification interrupted football championship that year. The Uruguayan Football Federation ( es, Federación Uruguaya de Football or ) was a federation of football clubs founded in Uruguay in 1923 which existed alongside the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) during the amateur era of Uruguayan football. The Federation was created in response to the Uruguayan football schism, which originated with the disaffiliation of AUF Peñarol and Central during the 1922 championship. Club Atlético Peñarol (; English: ''Peñarol Athletic Club'') —also known as ''Carboneros'', ''Aurinegros,'' and (familiarly) ''Manyas''— is a Uruguayan sports club from Montevideo. The name "Peñarol" comes from the Peñarol neighbourhood on the outskirts of Montevideo. Throughout its history the club has also participated in other sports, such as basketball and cycling. Central Español Fútbol Club, usually known simply as Central Español is a Uruguayan football club based in Montevideo. History The F.U.F era Together with Peñarol, Central founded FUF (Uruguayan football federation) in 1923 after being expelled from AUF. The FUF even made a parallel Uruguay national team (dissident to AUF) that played several international games based on Peñarol and Central squads. The Uruguayan Championship 1922 was the 22nd season of Uruguay's top-flight football league. Overview The tournament consisted of a two-wheel championship of all against all. It involved twelve teams, and the champion was Club Nacional de Football, Nacional. The 1923 Primera División championship was the first tournament organized by the Uruguayan Football Federation (FUF), a dissident association founded by clubs Central Español and Peñarol that had recently disaffiliated from the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF).
