Urquhart, Moray
Urquhart (; gd, Urchard) is a small village in Moray, Scotland. It is approximately east of Elgin, between the villages of Lhanbryde and Garmouth. Urquhart had a population of 420 (as of the 2001 Census). Barony of Urquhart history Mary Queen of Scots, the Dowager Queen of France, in 1561 rewarded her trusted friend, and most loyal supporter George Seton, 7th Lord Seton, with the stewardship of the estates of Pluscarden Priory and four years later, she gave the Priory to his son, her godson, Alexander Seton. Urquhart () is a Highland Scottish clan. The clan dates to the 13th–century and is most associated with the area of Cromarty. In modern times there are two parishes in Scotland named Urquhart, one in Elgin and one on the Black Isle. There is also most famously Urquhart Castle, by Glen Urquhart and on the banks of Loch Ness, which takes its name from the old barony of Urquhart. Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle (; gd, Caisteal na Sròine) is a ruined castle that sits beside Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland. The castle is on the A82 road, south-west of Inverness and east of the village of Drumnadrochit. The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification. Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. It was subsequently held as a royal castle and was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls of Ross. The castle was granted to the Clan Grant in 1509, though conflict with the MacDonalds continued. Despite a series of further raids the castle was strengthened, only to be largely abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces, and subsequently decayed. Urquhart and Logie Wester is a parish within the county of Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. It is situated in the area known as the Black Isle and is in the Highland (council area). History The parishes of Urquhart and Logiebride were united to form one parish in 1845. Logiebride forms the western half of the parish hence Logie Wester, and Urquhart forms the eastern half. Both Urquhart and Logiebride previously had their own parish churches, both of which are now in ruins. However today there are several more modern churches in the parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester.
