Uriah Lott
Uriah Lott (1842–1915) was an American engineer who worked on the development of railways. Lott, Texas, is named after him because of his role in bringing the railway through Falls County, Texas. While he was not originally from Texas, he made a large impact on the transportation system throughout the state. Life Uriah Lott was born January 30, 1842, in Albany, New York. In his early twenties he moved to Illinois for the Chicago and Alton Railroad. In 1867 he moved from Illinois to Corpus Christi where he found a passion and understanding for railway expansion. Before finding his new passion for railway expansion he owned a small store in Corpus Christi in 1867. He would later go on to work as a county clerk for a brief time as well as becoming a ranch supply salesman. He would go on to start another company of his own in 1869, ''U.Lott & Company.'' Lott, Texas
Lott is a city in Falls County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 644. History The Texas Townsite Company bought the land in 1889. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was built through the area in 1890, Lott was founded; it was named in honor of Uriah Lott, president of the railroad. A post office was established at the settlement in 1890, with S. J. Crump as postmaster. When the community was incorporated by unanimous vote later that year, its population was estimated at more than 200. By 1892 Lott had Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, two cotton gins and gristmills, a weekly newspaper, and 350 residents. Its population estimates were as high as 1,200 by the end of the 1890s. Lott continued to prosper throughout the first part of the 20th century when the town developed into a well-known speed trap, securing the town's primary revenue source to the present day. Falls County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 16,968. The county seat is Marlin. It is named for the original 10-foot-tall waterfall on the Brazos River, which existed until the river changed course during a storm in 1866. The present falls is two miles northeast of the original falls, at the Falls on the Brazos Park, a camping site only a few miles out of Marlin on Farm to Market Road 712. Falls County is part of the Waco, Texas, metropolitan statistical area. With a large portion of its economy based on agriculture, Falls County is sixth among 254 Texas counties in corn production.
