Urgewald is a group that researches coal companies, because they are among the top contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and so cause climate change. The Global Coal Exit List, which they publish, is famous. Urgewald provided analysis to underpin a Guardian newspaper exposé on the "scores of vast projects" that the oil and gas majors are planning . If only a fraction of these projects proceed to exploitation, the consequences for the global climate will still be huge. Coal
Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata called coal seams. Coal is mostly carbon with variable amounts of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Coal is formed when dead plant matter decays into peat and is converted into coal by the heat and pressure of deep burial over millions of years. In common usage, climate change describes global warming—the ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its effects on Earth's climate system.
