Urgent (American Band)
Urgent was a short-lived American melodic rock band from New York City featuring former and future members of Sterling, Vendetta and Diving For Pearls. Urgent founding member Donnie Kehr and guitarist Yul Vazquez have both gone on to highly successful stage, movie and television acting careers. Biography Formed by brothers Michael (vocals, guitar), Don (vocals, keyboards) and Steve Kehr (drums), and rounded out by Miami native Yul Vazquez (lead guitar) and Klyph Black (bass), Urgent rose from the East Coast in the mid-1980s. Initially looked at by Epic Records, the band wound up signing with newly formed EMI subsidiary Manhattan Records and turned to British rock legends Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson for the production of their debut album. Urgent was a Canadian rock band formed in 1982 in Toronto, Ontario. History Sharing the name of a band from New York, the Canadian band Urgent was from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and formed when drummer Kim Hunt left the band Zon in 1982 and connected with bassist Doug Baynham and guitarist Wayne Siberry. With Baynham also handling the majority of the vocal duties, they wrote and practiced daily, practically living in the studio for three months. Keyboardist John McGoldrick was added for touring purposes and they quickly established themselves as one of the hotter new heavy acts on the Ontario circuit, and it wasn't long before they were playing shows across the country – catching the attention of Epic Records execs along the way. They submitted a three-song demo tape to Epic Records and signed a deal in the spring of 1983. "Urgent" is a song by the British-American rock band Foreigner, and the first single from their album '' 4'' in 1981. Background Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange wanted to hear every music idea singer Mick Jones had recorded on tape, no matter how embarrassing. One of these ideas was the opening riff for what would become "Urgent". “I had the riff starting out," Jones recalled. "And I said, 'That’s like an experimental instrumental thing that I’m working on.’ He said, ‘No, it isn’t anymore -– let’s take that one, because that’s got a lot of potential.’ There wasn’t even a song with it.” He also said, “‘Urgent’ … was a bit of a hybrid. Urgent! Records
Urgent! Records was an American record label owned by Tim Whitsett, based in Jackson, Mississippi, United States, and distributed by the Atlanta-based Ichiban Records. Label founder Whitsett produced albums for singer Jerry Butler and longtime associate Tommy Tate. The Butler album (''Time and Faith'') featured Chips Moman's American rhythm section, and both albums featured Whitsett's keyboardist brother Carson Whitsett, who wrote several songs for the projects. Other artists with CD releases on Urgent! were The Dells, Roy Hytower, and three albums by Bobby Rush, whose ''I Ain't Studdin' You'' (URG 4117) in 1991 was the company's best seller and remains one of the artist's better known works. The label's catalog was later incorporated into the works of The Malaco Music Group. Both Tim Whitsett and Bobby Rush then joined Malaco Records with Whitsett serving as Copyright Manager.
