Australind
Australind is a town in Western Australia, located 12 km north-east of Bunbury's central business district. Its local government area is the Shire of Harvey. At the 2016 census, Australind had a population of 14,539. History Prior to European settlement, the area was home to the Wardandi people. Early explorers and settlers found them to be excellent trackers, and many of them found employment on farms. The first sighting of the coast was by Captain A. P. Jonk in the VOC ship ''Emeloort'', who sighted land at 33°12' S (most likely opposite the estuary from Australind) on 24 February 1658 while looking for ''Vergulde Draeck'', but did not land. A few months later, ''Elburg'', under Capt. J. P. Peereboom, anchored off what is now Bunbury. Peerboom met three Aboriginal people, and returned to Batavia on 16 July 1658. Harriet Taylor Upton House
The Harriet Taylor Upton House is a historic house museum at 380 Mahoning Avenue NW in Warren, Ohio. Built about 1840, it was the residence of suffragette Harriet Taylor Upton (1853–1945) from 1887 to 1931. The house was the headquarters of Upton's National American Woman's Suffrage Association from 1903 to 1905, and was thus an important site in the early 20th century push for women's suffrage. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992. It is owned by a local nonprofit, and is open for tours by appointment. Description and history The Harriet Taylor Upton House is located in downtown Warren, on the northeast side of Mahoning Avenue near the municipal offices, an area known locally as "Millionaire's Row". Bebop or bop is a style of jazz developed in the early-to-mid-1940s in the United States. The style features compositions characterized by a fast tempo, complex chord progressions with rapid chord changes and numerous changes of key, instrumental virtuosity, and improvisation based on a combination of harmonic structure, the use of scales and occasional references to the melody. Jazz Club
A jazz club is a venue where the primary entertainment is the performance of live jazz music, although some jazz clubs primarily focus on the study and/or promotion of jazz-music. Jazz clubs are usually a type of nightclub or bar, which is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages. Jazz clubs were in large rooms in the eras of Orchestral jazz and big band jazz, when bands were large and often augmented by a string section. Large rooms were also more common in the Swing era, because at that time, jazz was popular as a dance music, so the dancers needed space to move. With the transition to 1940s-era styles like Bebop and later styles such as soul jazz, small combos of musicians such as quartets and trios were mostly used, and the music became more of a music to listen to, rather than a form of dance music. Clark Monroe's Uptown House
Clark Monroe's Uptown House, sometimes shortened to Monroe's Uptown House or simply Monroe's, was a nightclub in New York City. Along with Minton's Playhouse, it was one of the two principal jazz clubs in the early history of bebop. History Clark Monroe opened the Uptown House in the 1930s at 198 West 134th St in Harlem, in a building which formerly held Barron's Club (where Duke Ellington worked early in the 1920s) and the Theatrical Grill. From the late 1930s, the club presented swing jazz; Billie Holiday held a residence there for three months in 1937. In the early 1940s, the club became known for its jam sessions, where many of the players involved in the birth of bebop played together. William Upton House
The William Upton House was built as a private residence located at 40433 Utica Road in Sterling Heights, Michigan, United States. It is the oldest house in the city, and now houses public offices. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1983. History William Upton was born in 1835 in Leicestershire, England, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1841. The Uptons first settled in Detroit, then moved to Sterling Township in 1845. In 1861, William Upton married Sarah Jeanette Aldrich, and in 1866-67 he built this house on his farm. Upton was a successful and prosperous farmer, and also sold fish caught in the Clinton River, and by 1891 the farm spread out over 138 acres. Upton House, Warwickshire
Upton House is a country house in the civil parish of Ratley and Upton, in the English county of Warwickshire, about northwest of Banbury, Oxfordshire. It is in the care of the National Trust. History The house was built on the site of the hamlet of Upton, which was destroyed in about 1500 when the land was cleared for pasture. The estate passed through various hands until the early 16th century when it was bought by Sir William Danvers. It remained with the Danvers family until 1688 when Sir Rushout Cullen purchased the estate for £7,000 (equivalent to £ in ). Cullen built the house for himself in about 1695. Blanchard-Upton House
The Blanchard-Upton House is a historic house in Andover, Massachusetts. It is a First Period 2.5-story saltbox, which is distinctive for having an integral leanto section rather than one that was added after other parts of the house. The exact date of its construction is not known: it was probably built by Thomas Blanchard, a cordwainer, sometime between 1699, when he bought the land, and 1740, when he died. There are some features that are suggestive of a later construction date, but these may also have been the result of alterations by Blanchard or his son, who inherited the property. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, where it is listed at its old address, 62 Osgood Street. At the time of its listing, the property had already been subdivided.
