Unión Chocó
Unión Chocó () is a town in the Panamanian indigenous territory (''comarca indígena'') of Emberá. It is located in, and is the capital of, Cémaco District. Panama
Panama ( , ; es, link=no, Panamá ), officially the Republic of Panama ( es, República de Panamá), is a transcontinental country spanning the southern part of North America and the northern part of South America. Comarca Indígena
A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a March (territory), "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese language, Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque language, Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician language, Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Although the English word "county" and its near synonym "shire" have similar meanings, they are usually translated into Spanish and Portuguese as ''condado'', a term which in the Iberian peninsula only refers to regions historically ruled by a ''conde'' (count or earl). Cémaco District
Cémaco District is a Districts of Panama, district (''distrito'') of Comarca Emberá-Wounaan in Panama. The capital is Unión Chocó. The area of this ''district'' is 3097.5 sq. kilometers. It is on the eastern part of Comarca Emberá-Wounaan. The other side of the Comarca is Sambú District. Omar Torrijos
Omar Efraín Torrijos Herrera (February 13, 1929 – July 31, 1981) was the Commander of the Panamanian National Guard and military leader of Panama from 1968 to his death in 1981. Torrijos was never officially the president of Panama, but instead held titles including "Maximum Leader of the Panamanian Revolution". Torrijos took power in a ''coup d'état'' and instituted a number of social reforms. Torrijos is best known for negotiating the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties that eventually gave Panama full sovereignty over the Panama Canal. The two treaties guaranteed that Panama would gain control of the Panama Canal after 1999, ending the control of the canal that the U.S. had exercised since 1903. On December 31, 1999, the final phase of the treaty, the US relinquished control of the Panama Canal and all areas in what had been the Panama Canal Zone.
