University Of Texas Sailing Team
The University of Texas Sailing Team is a nationally competitive college club sports in the United States, club sports team of the University of Texas at Austin. Their goal is to expand the love and knowledge of competitive Sailing (sport), sailing throughout the university community and their conference at large. The club encourages participation from all undergraduate students at UT, regardless of experience although the club also recruits students with high school sailing experience. Each fall and spring Texas Sailing fields competitive coed and women's teams in the Southeastern Intercollegiate Sailing Association district of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association, travelling around the country to race in intercollegiate regattas. The club also hosts two or more regattas annually, as well as an annual Alumni Regatta. The team is governed by a board of student officers. Burgee
A burgee is a distinguishing flag, regardless of its shape, of a recreational boating organization. In most cases, they have the shape of a pennon, pennant. Etiquette Yacht clubs and their members may fly their club's burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. Sailing vessels may fly the burgee either from the main masthead or from a halyard under the lowermost starboard spreader. Most powerboats (i.e. those lacking any mast or having a single mast) fly the burgee off a short staff at the bow; two-masted power vessels fly the burgee at the foremast. Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships
The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) holds National Championships in seven different categories: * Coed Dinghy * Women’s Dinghy *Team Racing * Women's Team Racing * Men’s Singlehanded * Women’s Singlehanded *Match Racing (previously Sloop) The college team that compiles the best overall record in the six categories is awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy. Teams must qualify for the National Championships through conference championships. All regattas are scored low-point with no throw-out races. Racing is done on short courses. Boats are usually rotated each race so that each team sails each boat in the fleet once. The ICSA National Championships rotate amongst ICSA's seven different conferences each year. Flying Junior
The International FJ is a Dutch sailboat that was designed by Uus Van Essen and Conrad Gülcher as a trainer and one design racer, first built in 1956. The boat was initially called the Flying Dutchman Junior (after the Flying Dutchman one design racer), as it was designed as a trainer for that Olympic sailing class boat. It was later called the Flying Junior. In 1980 the name was again officially changed to the International FJ. The design became a World Sailing accepted International class in 1972-73. Production The design has been built by a large number of companies including Grampian Marine and Paceship Yachts in Canada, Chantier Naval Costantini in France, Alpa Yachts, Centro Nautico Adriatico, Comar Yachts and Nautivela in Italy, Advance Sailboat Corp, W. Paul Foerster
Paul Jeffrey Foerster (born November 19, 1963, in Rangely, Colorado) is an American sailor. He received All-American honors three times from the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association sailing for the University of Texas at Austin and competed at four Olympic Games in sailing: 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2004, winning total of three Olympic medals during his career. In the Flying Dutchman (FD) class he was successful with Stephen Bourdow (Silver 1992), and then in the 470 class with Bob Merrick (silver, 2000) and Kevin Burnham (gold, 2004). He now sails from Rush Creek Yacht Club in Heath, Texas, on Lake Ray Hubbard east of Dallas, Texas. ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship
ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship is one of the seven Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships. Since 1963, the winner is awarded the ''Glen S. Foster Trophy'', named after Glen Foster for his interest in collegiate sailing and devotion to singlehanded competition. Second place finisher receives the ''George Griswold Trophy''. The event is sailed in cat-rigged boats which have been designed for singlehanded sailing or which are adaptable to singlehanded sailing. Regattas
Boat racing is a sport in which boats, or other types of watercraft, race on water. Boat racing powered by oars is recorded as having occurred in ancient Egypt, and it is likely that people have engaged in races involving boats and other water-borne craft for as long as such watercraft have existed. A regatta is a series of boat races. The term comes from the Venetian language, with ''regata'' meaning "contest" and typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed water craft, although some powerboat race series are also called regattas.
