The University of Cuenca (Spanish: ''Universidad de Cuenca'') is an Ecuadorian university located in Cuenca. University of Cuenca is the principal university of Azuay Province. The university was officially founded in 1867, being the first university on Cuenca. History Created under the presidency of Jerónimo Carrión y Palacio, on October 15, 1867, under the name of ''University Corporation of Azuay'' and the faculties of Jurisprudence, of Medicine and Pharmacy, of Philosophy and Literature and of Theology. His first rector was the Ecuadorian lawyer and politician Benigno Malo . In 1868 the chairs of Industrial Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Engineering, Lithography and Engraving were created under the leadership of German professors. As a result of this, the Faculty of Sciences was created in 1890. On May 24, 1882, the Public Library of Azuay is founded at the University. Azuay (), Province of Azuay is a province of Ecuador, created on 25 June 1824. It encompasses an area of . Its capital is Cuenca. It is located in the south center of Ecuador in the highlands. History Of Ecuador (1895–1925)
This is a summary of the history of Ecuador from 1895-1925. Eloy Alfaro is the outstanding standard-bearer for Ecuador's Liberals, much as Gabriel García Moreno is for the Conservatives. Some Marxist groups have also looked to Alfaro; although his political program was in no way socialist, it did prove to be revolutionary in the extent to which it stripped the Roman Catholic Church of the power and privileges previously granted to it by García Moreno. Catholic officials and their Conservative allies did not give up without a fight, however. During the first year of Alfaro's presidency, Ecuador was ravaged by a bloody civil war in which clergymen commonly incited the faithful masses to rise in rebellion against the " atheistic alfaristas" and were, just as commonly, themselves victims of alfarista repression. Carlos Cueva Tamariz
Carlos Cueva Tamariz ( November 5, 1898 – April 8, 1991) was an Ecuadorian politician, lawyer and university professor. Early life Carlos Cueva was born on November 5, 1898 the first son of Agustín Cueva Muñoz and his wife Domitila Tamariz Larrea in Cuenca. His father was a journalist and politician that later worked at the Azuay Province's Government and at the City Hall of Cuenca. The family moved to Milagro when he was three, where his father worked as book keeper. 1904 the family returned to Cuenca and Cueva was educated at the catholic elementary school "San José de los HH.CC." Later he went to the "Colegio Seminario" High School until it closed on 1912. José María Velasco Ibarra
José María Velasco Ibarra (19 March 1893 – 30 March 1979) was an Ecuadorian politician. He became president of Ecuador five times, in 1934–1935, 1944–1947, 1952–1956, 1960–1961, and 1968–1972, and only in 1952–1956 he completed a full term. In his four other terms, he was removed by military force, and several times he was installed as president through a military coup.
