University College Of Agriculture And Environmental Studies
The University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies (UCAES) is a tertiary education initiative by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council under the authority of the Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Panin II (King of Akyem Abuakwa). It is the first university in Africa dedicated to agriculture and environmental studies. The university was registered under Ghana's Companies Code, 1963 (Act 179) as a company limited by guarantee in October 2006. The University College is located at Bunso, in the East Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region. It is a secular tertiary co-educational institution incorporated under the Ghana Companies Code, 1963 (Act 179) on 19 October 2006, and is one of the private sector initiatives for tertiary education. Okyenhene
Okyenhene is the title of the Tribal King of Akyem Abuakwa (also styled Okyeman), an old powerful traditional kingdom in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Okyenhene is also referred to as the Kwaebibiremhene as his traditional territory is an area of a dense forest. Again, the Okyenhene is considered the head of the Asona clan (Asona Piesie). Asona is the largest of the clans of the Akans which includes the Oyoko, Aduana, Agona, Asakyire, Bretuo, Ekuona among others. The role of Okyenhene is not hereditary, as a new Okeynhene is elected by a council. East Akim Municipal District
East Akim Municipal District is a former district that was located in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as East Akim District, which was created from the former East Akim District Council. Later, the northwest part of the district was split off to create Atiwa District on 17 February 2004; thus the remaining part has been retained as East Akim District. Then it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 29 February 2008 to become East Akim Municipal District. The Eastern Region is located in south Ghana and is one of the sixteen administrative regions of Ghana. Education In Ghana
Before the arrival of European settlers, who introduced a formal education system addressed to the elites, education in Ghana was mainly informal and based on apprenticeship. Economic activities in pre-colonial Ghana were based on farm produce shared within households and members of each household specialized in providing necessities such as cooking utilities, shelter, clothing, and furniture, and trade with other households was therefore practiced on a very small scale. As such there was no need for employment outside the household that would have otherwise called for disciplines, values, and skills through a formal education system. After colonization, Ghana's economy became a hybrid of subsistence and formal economy.
