The United States competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from February 9 to 25, 2018. The United States had its least successful showing at a Winter Olympics since the 1998 Nagano Games, ranking fourth in both the gold and total medal count with 9 and 23 medals, respectively. There were some notable successes for the team. Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall won the first Olympic gold medal in cross-country skiing ever for the United States in the women's team sprint event. Skip John Shuster led his team to the United States' first-ever gold medal in curling, winning the men's curling over Sweden. The women's team sprint freestyle cross-country skiing competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 21 February 2018 at 19:00 KST at the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The women's slopestyle competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 12 February 2018 at the Bogwang Phoenix Park in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Summary Due to high winds, the qualification round originally scheduled for 11 February 2018 was cancelled. All athletes competed in a two-run final round instead of the typical two-run qualification round and three-run final round. Due to the high winds on the final day, the snowboarding event was delayed for more than an hour. The strong headwinds continued into the final, causing many falls amongst the competitors. Of the 25 participants, only five managed to stay on their feet during the first run. No snowboarders recorded two clear runs. Several snowboarders said that the final was irresponsible. A total of ten snowboarding events were scheduled to take place between 10 and 24 February 2018. The parallel slalom event, which made its debut four years earlier at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was dropped from the games in 2018 in favour of a new big air event. Qualification A total of 258 quota spots were available to athletes to compete at the games (142 men and 116 women). Each National Olympic Committee was permitted to enter a maximum of 26 athletes, with a maximum of 14 men or 14 women. Shaun Roger White (born September 3, 1986) is an American former professional snowboarder and skateboarder. He is a five-time Olympian and a three-time Olympic gold medalist in half-pipe snowboarding. He holds the world record for the most X Games gold medals and most Olympic gold medals by a snowboarder. He has also won 10 ESPY Awards throughout his career in various categories. Early life White was born in San Diego, California, to parents Cathy and Roger.
