United States Bridge Federation
The United States Bridge Federation (USBF) is the national federation for contract bridge in the United States and a non-profit organization formed by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and the American Bridge Association (ABA) in 2001 to hold the United States Bridge Championships and to select, train, and support Open, Women, Senior and Junior teams to represent the United States in international competition. The USBF receives support for its teams from the ACBL International Fund and Junior Fund, its membership dues, contributions and entry fees for the USBCs. The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) is a governing body for contract bridge in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. American Bridge Association
The American Bridge Association (ABA) is a tournament bridge organization in the United States of America. Origins The ABA was formed in 1932 by black tennis players at Buckroe Beach, Virginia; at the time, blacks were excluded from most bridge events. The desire to compete in the sport of tennis despite the racial barriers of the time resulted in the creation of the American Tennis Association in 1916. The Association often held its matches on college campuses such as Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, and Lincoln University, where adequate facilities were available. One such championship event was held at Hampton in the year 1932. At the conclusion of the tournament, a group of tennis players, who were also bridge enthusiasts, suggested having a duplicate bridge match in the evening as a form of relaxation. Marty Fleisher
Martin (Marty) Fleisher (born October 12, 1958) is an American bridge player, employee benefits attorney, manager of investments in life insurance policies and investment advisor. Bridge career Having first learned bridge at the age of eight by observing his parents and uncle, Fleisher became the youngest American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Life Master from the New York metropolitan area in 1976 at age 17. At the same time, his team reached the final of the Grand National Teams knockout championship, making him the youngest player ever to reach the finals of a North American team bridge championship, a record he still holds. Jan Martel (bridge)
Janet Friedman Martel (born February 26, 1943) is an American bridge player from Davis, California. A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, she is a retired attorney and a past president of the United States Bridge Federation (USBF). She is married to Chip Martel, a world champion player. She was previously married to Lew Stansby another world champion player. Her parents Milton and Rose Friedman were both free market economists. Martel has won seven national championships, or national-rated events at North American Bridge Championships meets. Playing under the name Jan Stansby with Pat Leary in 1974, she won the Whitehead Women's Pairs, the premier ACBL annual championship for women pairs. She was inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2012. World Bridge Federation
The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the international governing body of contract bridge. The WBF is responsible for world championship competitions, most of which are conducted at a few multi-event meets on a four-year cycle. The most prestigious championships are those for national teams in Open, Women, and Seniors categories: the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup, and Senior Bowl (jointly the biennial "World Teams Championships"), and the quadrennial World Team Olympiads, incorporated in the World Mind Sports Games beginning 2008. The World Bridge Federation was founded August 1958 by delegates from Europe, North America, and South America (now Zones 1 to 3).
