United Regional Basketball League
The United Regional Basketball League (URBL) was a community-based amateur basketball league in the Philippines that played only one season in 2004. The league was managed by persons identified with the old Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), a professional community-based league that suspended operations in the middle of 2002. Basketball legend and former MBA commissioner Ramon Fernandez reprised his role with the URBL. History Sometime in February 2004, the Ilocos Sur Snipers of Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson and M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City of Michel Lhuillier ceded from the National Basketball League (NBL), which had just been renamed the National Basketball Conference (NBC). The two teams were not satisfied with the way the NBL/NBC was being managed and so opted to form their own league. The Quezon Convention Center is a multi-purpose convention center in Quezon located near the Provincial Capitol in Lucena, Philippines, Lucena, Quezon, Philippines. The Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots, or simply known as the Magnolia Hotshots, are a professional basketball team in the Philippine Basketball Association. The Alaska Aces were a professional basketball team in the Philippine Basketball Association since 1986 under the ownership of Alaska Milk Corporation (AMC) and the owner of 14 PBA championships, tied with the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Magnolia Hotshots for the second-most titles overall. They are one of the most popular teams in the league and the Philippines. 2023 MPBL Season
The 2023 MPBL season is the ongoing fifth season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) and the second as a professional league. The regular season began on March 11, 2023 and will end on September 30, 2023. The playoffs are set to begin in October 2023. The league took two breaks during the regular season, during Holy Week and during the Philippines' co-hosting of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. This season features 29 teams, with five teams returning to the league alongside two expansion teams: the Negros Muscovados and the Quezon Huskers. The Quezon Huskers are a Filipino professional basketball team based in the province of Quezon. The team primarily competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as one of six active teams based in Calabarzon, playing their home games at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena. The Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) was a community-based amateur commercial basketball league in Southern Philippines sanctioned by the country's National Sports Association for basketball, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). The league is made up of teams from the Visayas and Mindanao. Formal operations began on February 25, 2006 with the opening of the ML Kwarta Padala First Conference at the MSU-IIT Gym in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.
