Union Mills is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Maryland, United States. The community is home to the Union Mills Homestead Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The Solomon Arter House was listed in 1987 and the Philip and Uriah Arter Farm in 2006. Since the 1970s, Carroll County commissioners have tried to build a dam or reservoir centered nearby, defeated in the 1970s and revived in the 2000s as a proposed Union Mills Reservoir. Union Mills Homestead Historic District
Union Mills Homestead Historic District is a national historic district at Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, United States. Description The homestead comprises a dwelling house, a brick grist mill, a surviving bark shed from the 19th century tannery complex, a reconstructed tannery barn, and a Bollman-design bridge. History The Shriver Homestead was built in 1797 by Andrew and David Shriver and has been continually occupied by the family. The mill, also built 1797, is a large brick structure, built of locally manufactured brick laid in both Flemish bond and common bond. On June 30, 1863, General J.E.B. Stuart of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia camped at Union Mills and was hosted by part of the Shriver family. Solomon Arter House
The Solomon Arter House is a historic two-story, three-bay log home in Union Mills, Carroll County, Maryland, United States. It was built in about 1810 by Solomon Arter, a member of the Arter family that was prominent in the Pennsylvania German culture of this region. The structure is representative of Pennsylvania German domestic architecture in Carroll County, and is significant for the preservation of its interior stenciling. Philip and Uriah Arter Farm is a historic home and farm complex located at Union Mills, Carroll County, Maryland. The complex includes a frame house built about 1844, a frame bank barn built about 1888, and a deteriorated early-20th-century frame outbuilding. The house is a well-preserved example of a middling farmer's dwelling house from mid-19th-century Maryland. A proposed Union Mills Reservoir represents a half century of efforts by the Commissioners of the Carroll County, Maryland, to build variations on a "dam" or "reservoir" near Union Mills, Maryland, on the Big Pipe Creek, defeated by a petition led by the Carroll County Taxpayers' Committee in the 1970s. The plan may be alive among some county officials but may also be postponed "indefinitely."
