Union-Rennen
The Union-Rennen is a Group 2 flat horse race in Germany open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Cologne over a distance of 2,200 metres (about 1 mile and 3 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was established in 1834, and it was originally held at Tempelhof on the site of what became Berlin Tempelhof Airport. It was initially contested over 2,400 metres, and it was extended to 2,800 metres in 1837. The race was transferred to Hoppegarten in 1868, and it was cut to 2,200 metres in 1888. It was staged at Grunewald for a short period after World War I, and it returned to Hoppegarten during the 1920s. It was abandoned in 1945 and 1946, and it moved to Cologne in 1947. The Union-Rennen serves as a trial for the Deutsches Derby, and many horses have won both races. The first was Schwindler, a joint winner of the Derby in 1875. Nebos
Nebos (30 March 1976 – 26 June 1999) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best horses of his generation in Germany at the age of two winning three races including the Zukunfts Rennen. In the following year he won the Dr. Busch-Memorial, Union-Rennen, Grosser Preis von Berlin and Preis von Europa as well as finishing second to Königsstuhl in both the Deutsches Derby and the Aral-Pokal. Nebos emerged as the best racehorse in Germany in 1980, winning five races including the Gerling-Preis, Grosser Preis von Dortmund, Grosser Preis von Baden, Grosser Preis von Düsseldorf and the Grosser Preis von Berlin for the second time as well as being beaten less than two lengths in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Novellist is an Irish-bred, German-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won major races in four countries including the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in Italy, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the United Kingdom and the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany. Surumu (26 February 1974 – 3 November 1999) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Surumu, a Chestnut (coat), chestnut, was foaled in 1974 at Andreas Jacobs, the Jacobs family's Gestüt Fährhof near Bremen. He was from the Dark Ronald male line. His sire was Literat and his dam was Surama by Reliance II. Literat was a German 2000 Guineas winner, who, as a hot favourite and ridden by Lester Piggott, broke down in the Deutsches Derby, nevertheless finishing 5th in that race. Andreas Schütz
Andreas Schütz (born 19 February 1968) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. From a prominent racing family, he is the fourth generation to train professionally. Andreas Schütz started out as an amateur jockey, winning four German championships from 1984–1987 and the European championship in 1987. In 1992 he began working as an assistant trainer for his father Bruno Schütz who had built one of the Germany's most successful public training stables. Due to health problems, his father retired and in 1998 Andreas took over the running of the stable. Highly successful, Andreas Schütz has won numerous German Group one races including the five wins in both the Deutsches Derby and the Preis der Diana. Four times he has been his country's annual leading trainer in wins. Acatenango (1982–2005) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse. Sired by the Deutsches Derby winner and German Champion sire, Surumu, he was out of the English mare Aggravate. Acatenango's ancestry includes German Champion sire Dark Ronald, the French Champion sire, Tantieme, English Triple Crown champion Gainsborough, and the most influential Italian sire, Nearco. Racing in 1984 at age two, Acatenango's best finish was a third in the Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld. In 1985 he embarked on a thirteen-race winning streak that tied a European record held by Ardross and Brigadier Gerard. Included in his wins was the Grosser Bavaria Preis, a listed race at Munich Racecourse and the important Group One Aral-Pokal at the Gelsenkirchen Racecourse in Gelsenkirchen.
