''Under the Protection of Ka'Bah'' ( id, Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah) is a 2011 Indonesian teen drama film directed by Hanny Saputra based on the 1938 novel of the same name by writer Hamka. The film was selected as the Indonesian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. Plot Hamid (Herjunot Ali) and Zainab (Laudya Cynthia Bella) are teenagers from different social classes; Hamid comes from the lower classes, while Zainab is the daughter of local nobility. Hamid's mother works for Zainab's family, and Hamid has his schooling paid for by Zainab's family. Eventually they fall in love; however, Hamid's mother warns him that they will never be successful. After Hamid is accused of touching Zainab inappropriately, Hamid is run out of Padang, eventually reaching Mecca and praying at the Kaaba. Zainab is betrothed to the son of another nobleman. Hanny Saputra
Hanny R. Saputra (born 11 May 1965) is an Indonesian director. One of his films, '' Under the Protection of Ka'Bah'', was Indonesia's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the 84th Academy Awards. Biography Saputra was born in Salatiga, Central Java, on 11 May 1965. As a child he enjoyed watching movies, and in 1985 he enrolled in the Jakarta Art Institute to learn filmmaking. In 1997 he made his directorial debut with the television film ''Sepanjang Jalan Kenangan'' (''Along Memory Lane''), which was not picked up by any stations as it was considered too idealistic. He released his first feature film, ''Tato'', in 2002. After input from senior filmmakers Leo Sutanto and Lo Fen Koei, he began to focus more on commercially viable films, releasing ''Virgin'' two years later. Indonesia has submitted feature films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1987. The award is given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. This is a list of submissions to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Nine shortlisted contenders were revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations. Asrul Sani (10 June 1926 – 11 January 2004) was an Indonesian writer, poet and screenwriter. Biography Sani was born in Rao, West Sumatra on 10 June 1926. His father was Sultan Marah Sani Syair Alamsyah. Together with Chairil Anwar and Rivai Apin, Sani published ''Tiga Menguak Takdir'' in 1950.
