''Un jardin sur l'Oronte'' ("A Garden on the Orontes") is an opera (" lyric drama") in four acts and eight tableaux by Alfred Bachelet to a French libretto adapted by Franc-Nohain from a novel of the same name by Maurice Barrès. The premiere took place on 7 November 1932 at the Palais Garnier in Paris, France. French opera is one of Europe's most important operatic traditions, containing works by composers of the stature of Rameau, Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc and Messiaen. Pierre Nougaro (27 April 1904 in Toulouse - 26 October 1988 in Marseille) was a French operatic baritone, the father of the singer Claude Nougaro. Life As a child, Nougaro enrolled in the evening classes of the at the instigation of his parents, who were themselves choristers. He obtained a first prize for singing. Nougaro was director of the in Besançon in the 1950s and then of the Rennes theatre in 1958. In Rennes, Nougaro increased audiences by expanding the repertoire, including operettas in the season, and a world premiere every year. He also brought in the famous opera stars. José Luccioni (14 October 1903 in Bastia – 5 October 1978 in Marseille) was a French operatic tenor of Corsican origin. He possessed one of the best dramatic voices of the 1930s and 1940s. Initially a racing car driver and mechanic at the Citroën car company, his voice was discovered while he was serving in the military. Martial Singher (August 14, 1904 – March 9, 1990) was a French baritone opera singer born in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
