''Ulysse'' or ''Ulysse et Pénélope'' (''Ulysses'' or ''Ulysses and Penelope'') is an opera by the French composer Jean-Féry Rebel, first performed at the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opéra) on 21 January 1703. It takes the form of a ''tragédie en musique'' in a prologue and five acts. The libretto is by Guichard. Recording *''Ulysse''. Jean-Féry Rebel
Jean-Féry Rebel (18 April 1666 – 2 January 1747) was an innovative French Baroque composer and violinist. Biography Rebel, a child violin prodigy, was the most famous offspring of Jean Rebel, a tenor in Louis XIV's private chapel. He later became a student of the great violinist, singer, conductor, and composer Jean-Baptiste Lully. By 1699, at age 33, Rebel became first violinist of the Académie royale de musique (also known as the Opéra). He travelled to Spain in 1700. Upon his return to France in 1705, he was given a place in the prestigious ensemble known as the Les Vingt-quatre Violons du Roi. He was chosen Maître de Musique in 1716. His most important position at court was Chamber Composer, receiving the title in 1726. Rebel served as court composer to Louis XIV and ''maître de musique'' at the Académie, and directed the Concert Spirituel (during the 1734–1735 season). Tragédie en musique (, ''musical tragedy''), also known as tragédie lyrique (, ''lyric tragedy''), is a genre of French opera introduced by Jean-Baptiste Lully and used by his followers until the second half of the eighteenth century. Operas in this genre are usually based on stories from Classical mythology or the Italian romantic epics of Tasso and Ariosto. The stories may not necessarily have a tragic ending – in fact, most do not – but the works' atmospheres are suffused throughout with an affect of nobility and stateliness. The standard ''tragédie en musique'' has five acts. Earlier works in the genre were preceded by an allegorical prologue and, during the lifetime of Louis XIV, these generally celebrated the king's noble qualities and his prowess in war. Guillemette Laurens (born 6 November 1957 in Fontainebleau, France) is a French operatic mezzo-soprano. Guillemette trained at the Academy of Toulouse and debuted as Baba in ''The Rake's Progress'' at Salle Favart. She took part in the premiere recording of Lully's '' Atys'' conducted by William Christie. She is a highly respected singer of Baroque music, both as a soprano and a mezzo-soprano. Hugo Reyne
Hugo Reyne (born in 1961) is a contemporary French recorder player, oboist and conductor. He is the founder and music director of La Simphonie du Marais. Biography Born in Paris, Hugo Reyne began learning the flute and oboe at a very young age. In 1984, he won the first prize for chamber music at the Bruges International Chamber Music Competition. In the 1980s, Hugo Reyne played flute and oboe in most of the Parisian baroque ensembles, and from 1983 to 1996 he played the 1st flute at the Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie. He has worked with conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Philippe Herreweghe, Gustav Leonhardt and Jordi Savall. In 1987 he founded his historical interpretation ensemble, La Simphonie du Marais and was particularly interested in French lyrical music. French opera is one of Europe's most important operatic traditions, containing works by composers of the stature of Rameau, Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc and Messiaen.
