Ullsfjorden
or is a fjord in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The fjord runs through the municipalities of Tromsø, Karlsøy, and Lyngen. The fjord flows from the village of Sjøvassbotn northwards along the west side of the Lyngen Peninsula (where the famous Lyngen Alps are located). The Kjosen fjord branches off to the east side and the Grøtsundet strait branches off to the west (which then flows into the Tromsøysundet). The islands of Reinøya and Karlsøya lie along the western side of the fjord. The southern part of the Ullsfjorden is also known as ''Sørfjorden''. Ullsfjord
Ullsfjord is a former municipality in Troms county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1902 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in what is now the eastern part of Tromsø Municipality and the southwestern part of Lyngen Municipality. The municipality encompassed the area surrounding the Ullsfjorden between Tromsø and Lyngen. The administrative centre was the village of Sjursnes where Ullsfjord Church is located. Name The municipality was originally named ''Sørfjord'' from 1902 until 1938. This literally translates as "the southern fjord" (a branch of the larger Ullsfjorden). In 1938, the name of the municipality was changed to ''Ullsfjord'', after the name of the nearby Ullsfjorden. The municipality's new name literally means the fjord of ''Ullr'', a god from ancient Germanic paganism. Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps ( no, Lyngsalpene) are a mountain range in northeastern Troms og Finnmark county in Norway, east of the Tromsø (city), city of Tromsø. The mountain range runs through the municipalities of Lyngen, Balsfjord, and Storfjord. The mountains follow the western shore of the Lyngen (fjord), Lyngen fjord in a north-south direction. The length of the range is at least (depending on definition—there are mountains all the way south to the border with Sweden) and the width is . The mountains dominate the Lyngen Peninsula, which is bordered by the Lyngen (fjord), Lyngen fjord to the east, and the Ullsfjorden to the west. The British climber William Cecil Slingsby was the first to climb many of the peaks. The mountains are of alpine character, popular among extreme skiers.
