Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps ( no, Lyngsalpene) are a mountain range in northeastern Troms og Finnmark county in Norway, east of the city of Tromsø. The mountain range runs through the municipalities of Lyngen, Balsfjord, and Storfjord. The mountains follow the western shore of the Lyngen fjord in a north-south direction. The length of the range is at least (depending on definition—there are mountains all the way south to the border with Sweden) and the width is . The mountains dominate the Lyngen Peninsula, which is bordered by the Lyngen fjord to the east, and the Ullsfjorden to the west. The British climber William Cecil Slingsby was the first to climb many of the peaks. The mountains are of alpine character, popular among extreme skiers. Ullsfjorden
or is a fjord in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The fjord runs through the municipalities of Tromsø, Karlsøy, and Lyngen. The fjord flows from the village of Sjøvassbotn northwards along the west side of the Lyngen Peninsula (where the famous Lyngen Alps are located). The Kjosen fjord branches off to the east side and the Grøtsundet strait branches off to the west (which then flows into the Tromsøysundet). The islands of Reinøya and Karlsøya lie along the western side of the fjord. The southern part of the Ullsfjorden is also known as ''Sørfjorden''. The area surrounding the Ullsfjorden was part of the municipality of Ullsfjord for about 60 years during the 20th century. Storsteinnes
Storsteinnes is the administrative center of Balsfjord Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The village has a population (2017) of 1,076 which gives the village a population density of . This makes it the largest urban area in the municipality. Storsteinnes Chapel is located in this village. Location Storsteinnes is located at the southern end of the Sørkjosen, which is a branch of the main Balsfjorden. The European route E6 highway formerly passed through the central part of the village, but the highway now passes about southeast of the village center. The Sagelv river runs through the village and Josefvatnet lake is located to the northwest of the village. The village of Nordkjosbotn is about to the east of Storsteinnes. Balsfjorden
or is a fjord in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The long fjord runs through the municipalities of Balsfjord and Tromsø. It branches off the Tromsøysundet strait just south of the city of Tromsø and it flows in a north–south direction, ranging from wide. The European route E8 highway follows most of the eastern shore of the fjord and the European route E6 highway runs along the southern end of the fjord. The village of Storsteinnes lies along the southwestern coast of the fjord and the village of Nordkjosbotn lies at the southeastern end of the fjord. Rain Shadow
A rain shadow is an area of significantly reduced rainfall behind a mountainous region, on the side facing away from prevailing winds, known as its leeward side. Evaporated moisture from water bodies (such as oceans and large lakes) is carried by the prevailing onshore breezes towards the drier and hotter inland areas. When encountering elevated landforms, the moist air is driven upslope towards the peak, where it expands, cools, and its moisture condenses and starts to precipitate. If the landforms are tall and wide enough, most of the humidity will be lost to precipitation over the windward side (also known as the ''rainward'' side) before ever making it past the top. As the air descends the leeward side of the landforms, it is compressed and heated, producing foehn winds that ''absorb'' moisture downslope and cast a broad "shadow" of dry climate region behind the mountain crests. Store Lenangstind
Store Lenangstind or Store Lenangstinden is a mountain in Lyngen Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is within the Lyngen Alps mountain range and has the fourth-highest primary factor in Norway. It is located about northwest of the village of Lyngseidet, just west of the Lyngenfjorden. William Cecil Slingsby
William Cecil Slingsby (1849–1929) was an English mountain climber and alpine explorer from Carleton, North Yorkshire. Born in Bell Busk, near Gargrave, Yorkshire, Slingsby first visited Norway in 1872 and fell in love with the country. He has been called the discoverer of the Norwegian mountains, and the father of Norwegian mountaineering (insofar as he seems to be the first who actively pursued climbing in Norway and was the first person on several mountains). Together with Norway's early skilled mountain climber Kristian Bing (1862–1935), he is considered to have been a pioneer explorer of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe. Troms Og Finnmark
Troms og Finnmark (; sme, Romsa ja Finnmárku ; fkv, Tromssa ja Finmarkku; fi, Tromssa ja Finnmark, lit. Troms and Finnmark in English), is a county in northern Norway that was established on 1 January 2020 as the result of a regional reform. Lyngen (fjord)
Lyngen (also known as , , or ) is a fjord in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The long fjord is the longest fjord in Troms and it is often used as the dividing line between "northern Troms" and "southern Troms". The fjord is located within the municipalities of Skjervøy, Nordreisa, Lyngen, Gáivuotna–Kåfjord, and Storfjord. It stretches from the village of Hatteng in Storfjord Municipality in the south all the way north to the islands of Skjervøy Municipality. The Lyngen Alps lie along the western shore of the fjord and the European route E06 highway runs along the eastern shore. The Kåfjorden branches off of the main fjord on the east side, and the southernmost part of the fjord is also known as the Storfjorden.
