The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus ( uk, Українська Капеля Бандуристів Північної Америки ім. Т. Г. Шевченка; full name: ''The Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America'') is a semi-professional male choir which accompanies itself with the multi-stringed Ukrainian folk instrument known as the bandura. It traces its roots to Ukraine in 1918 and has been based in the USA since 1949. : ' (, "Eastern worker") was a Nazi German designation for foreign slave workers gathered from occupied Central and Eastern Europe to perform forced labor in Germany during World War II. The Germans started deporting civilians at the beginning of the war and began doing so at unprecedented levels following Operation Barbarossa in 1941. They apprehended ''Ostarbeiter'' from the newly-formed German districts of Reichskommissariat Ukraine, District of Galicia (itself attached to the General Government), and Reichskommissariat Ostland. These areas comprised German-occupied Poland and the conquered territories of the Soviet Union. Zhytomyr ( uk, Жито́мир, translit=Zhytomyr ; russian: Жито́мир, Zhitomir ; pl, Żytomierz ; yi, זשיטאָמיר, Zhitomir; german: Schytomyr ) is a city in the north of the western half of Ukraine. Adrian is a form of the Latin given name Adrianus or Hadrianus. Its ultimate origin is most likely via the former river Adria from the Venetic and Illyrian word ''adur'', meaning "sea" or "water". Kobzarska Sich
Kobzarska Sich (Ukrainian: Кобзарська Січ) is a summer music camp devoted to learning bandura and Ukrainian choral music. Kobzarska Sich is held every August at All Saints Camp in Emlenton, Pennsylvania. In its current format, four courses are offered: Bandura Course, Junior Bandura Workshop (for children between the ages of 9 and 11), the Ukrainian Choral Workshop, and the Ukrainian Sacred Music Workshop. For many years the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus has sponsored various bandura camps and workshops throughout North America. Oleh Mahlay
Oleh Mahlay is an American violinist, pianist, bandurist, choral conductor and lawyer of Ukrainian ethnicity. Mahlay has made a significant contribution to Ukrainian emigre music, primarily through his work with the Ukrainian bandura and the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus. Merited Figure of Arts of Ukraine. Marko Farion ( uk, Марко Дмитрович Фаріон ) (born 03/28/1962 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a Ukrainian American bandurist, opera singer and dentist. Farion currently resides in Sterling Heights, Michigan with dental offices in Clawson, Michigan and Artesia, New Mexico. His music has been featured on PBS. He has been referenced in several books about bandura and bandurists. Early life and education Farion studied bandura and voice under Hryhory Kytasty (1907-1984), the legendary bandurist, composer and Musical Director and Conductor of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus. Farion attended Case Western Reserve University where he completed a BA in Chemistry with a minor in Music with voice being his principal instrument. His vocal teacher was Gretchen Garnett.
