Uhrencup
The Uhrencup is a club football tournament, held annually in Grenchen and Biel in Switzerland. The Uhrencup is seen as a testament to the major influence that is exercised by the local industry on the cultural lives of the areas residents. The tournament usually features four teams (sometimes more), each playing two matches, and is held in July as a friendly tournament, the format of which tends to be fluid. For the teams taking part, the tournament is a welcome opportunity to prepare for the upcoming football season. Origin Founded in 1962 by representatives of Grenchen's watchmaking industry, the first Uhrencup was held to celebrate the inauguration of the new grandstand at the local Brühl stadium. Serge Muhmenthaler
Serge Muhmenthaler (born 20 May 1953) is a Swiss former professional association football, football player and Referee (association football), referee. He played as a forward (association football), forward during the 1970s and 1980s. As referee he is known for having refereed a Swiss Cup Final, a UEFA Europa League, UEFA Cup Final and one match in the UEFA Euro 1996. Career as player Muhmenthaler was brought up in Grenchen and started his football with the youth teams of the local football club FC Grenchen. He also played in their first team in the Swiss Challenge League, Nationalliga B and they won promotion to the Swiss Super League, Nationalliga A in the 1970–71 season. The team also won the Uhrencup that year and Muhmenthaler scored the first goal in the final, as they beat FC Basel 3–1. FC Grenchen is a Swiss football club, based in Grenchen. They currently play in the 2. Liga, and play their matches at the Brühl Stadium. History FC Grenchen was founded in 1906. In 1937 they gained promotion to the top league of Swiss football, Nationalliga A, in these inter-war years they came runners-up in this league three times, and runner up in the cup, but their biggest success came post-war coming second in the league one further time before winning the cup the following season in 1960. They got relegated from the top flight in 1986, and played in Nationalliga B until 1995 when they were relegated to the 1st Liga., where they currently play. Walter Balmer (footballer)
Walter Balmer (28 March 1948 – 27 December 2010) was a Swiss international footballer. Club career Balmer started his youth football with his local team in Thun. He played as a right winger for FC Thun between 1964 and 1968. Between 1969 and 1976 he played for FC Basel in the Nationalliga A and won four league titles in the years 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973. In the 1975 Swiss Cup Final Balmer scored the winning goal five minutes before the end of overtime. Balmer also won the first edition of the Swiss League Cup in 1972 with Basel. International career Between the years 1969 and 1973 Balmer played 20 games for the Swiss national team in which he scored two goals. In 1971, he scored during the 4–0 win against Turkey and in 1972 during the 1–1 draw with Denmark.
